GENEALOGY

Sidi 'Ali al-Turki. b. on the island of Crete. Joined the Janissaries in Istanbul and migrated to Tunis ca. 1650, and cdt of a garrison of the army at Le Kef. m. (first) at Kef, a lady from the al-Shanufi tribe (d. ca. 1734, bur. Turbat al-Fillary, Tunis). m. (second) Lalla Hafsia al-Sharnia, a widow, and a sister of Ghazali al-Sharni. He d. at Le Kef, before 5th March 1677 (bur. there), having had issue, two sons and one daughter:

Amir al-Mukarrim 'Abu'l Azad Husain I Pasha, Beylerbeyi of Tunis. b. at Le Kef, 1675, second son of Sidi 'Ali al-Turki, by his second wife, Lalla Hafsia al-Sharnia, educ. privately. Joined the Janissaries and became Agha of the Spahis, Treasurer (Khaznadar) to Muhammad bin Murad Bey. Proclaimed as Bey and Possessor of the Kingdom of Tunis, 12th July 1705. Installed 15th July 1705. Imperial Ottoman Viceroy of Ifriqiya 1707-1735. Granted the rank of Amir al-Liva before 4/11/1714, and title of Amir al-Mukarrim before March 1729. Entered into treaty relations with France in 1710, the Netherlands in 1712, Britain I 1725 and Austria in 1725. Defeated at the Battle of Smindja by his nephew 'Ali Pasha, 4th September 1735. Fled to Sousse and later to Kairouan. m. (first) at Le Kef, 169x, Lalla Fatima al-Ghazaliya (d. after 6th April 1727), daughter of his maternal uncle Ghazali al-Sharin, sometime Governor of Le Kef. m. (second) 1709, Lalla Fatima bint 'Usman [Fatma al-Othmana] (b. ca. 1693; d. 1734, bur. Turbat al-Fillary, Tunis), granddaughter of Aziza al-Othmana and a descendant of Kara 'Usman Dey (r 1595-1610). m. (third) 1709, Lalla Jannat (b. 1696), a former Genoese slave, probably from Corsica. m. (fourth?) the widow or daughter of Ramadan Bey. He was k. (beheaded) by his great nephew, Sidi Yunus bin 'Ali, at Kairouan, 13th May 1740 (bur. Turbat Sidi Kasim as-Sababti, Tunis), having had issue, four sons and one daughter by his third wife, and five daughters by the others:

'Abu'l Hasan 'Ali I Pasha, Beylerbeyi of Tunis. b. 30th June 1688, eldest son of Sidi Muhammad bin 'Ali al-Turki, sometime Governor of Le Kef and Sousse, by his wife, a daughter of Yusuf, Chief of the Awlad Hasan, educ. privately. Invested as Heir Apparent with the title of Bey al-Mahalla 17th January 1706, and was granted the title of Pasha by the Ottoman Sultan 1724. Displaced as Heir Apparent by his cousin, 1726. Installed at the Palace of Bardo, on the deposition of his uncle, 8th September 1735. Defeated, captured and deposed by the Algerians, 2nd September 1756. Taken to Algiers in chains. m. (first) before 1709, Lalla Kabira Mamia Beya (d. at Hammam-Lif, 14th April 1747, bur. Kubbet Mamia, Djebel Sidi Belhassen), daughter of Si 'Ali bin Mami, sometime Kahiya of Tunis. m. (second) April 1714 (div. 1728) Lalla Aisha [or Hafsia] Beya (b. 1702), daughter of his uncle, H.H. Amir al-Mukarrim 'Abu'l Azad Husain I Pasha, Beylerbeyi of Tunis, by his second wife, Lalla Fatima bint 'Usman [Fatma al-Othmana], daughter of 'Usman Dey. m. (third) 1734, a daughter of Muhammad as-Saghir, Chief of the Hannensha walad Ammar. m. (fourth) a sister of Shaikh Muhammad Dargouth. m. (fifth) a slave girl. m. (sixth) another slave girl? He was k. (strangled) by the followers of his cousin Muhammad bin Husain, 22nd September 1756 (bur. Turba al-Bashiya, Suq al-Qashashin, Tunis), having had issue, three sons by his first wife, and three daughters:

Invested as Heir Apparent with the title of Bey al-Mahalla, before 8th September 1725. Governor of Sousse 1736-1739. Installed at the Palace of Bardo, after the deposition of his cousin, 2nd September 1756. m. (first) Lalla … (d. 1727), a daughter of Kara Mustafa Pasha, the last Dey of Tunis. m. (second) Lalla Aisha, a former slave girl. m. (third) 1735/1736, a daughter of Jamal ud-din, sometime Kaid of Sousse. m. (fourth) 1756, Lalla Halima (b.1728; d. at Tunis, 1786), daughter of a slave. m. (fifth) Lalla Fatima. He d. at the Palace of Bardo, 12th February 1759 (bur. Turbat Sidi Kasim as-Sababti, Tunis), having had issue, two sons:
