Appointed as Heir Apparent with the title of Raja Muda, 31st October 1934 and formally installed as such 20th July 1936. Succeeded on the death of his father, 31st March 1938. Installed, 4th April 1938. Crowned at Istana Mahkora, Klang, as Sultan dan Yang di-Pertuan Negeri Selangor Dar ul-Ihsan, 26th January 1939. Summoned to King's House, Kuala Lumpur, and deposed by the Japanese military commander, 15th January 1942. Restored on the return of the British Military Administration to Klang, 14th September 1945. Attended the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, at Westminster Abbey in London, 1953. Elected as the fist Deputy Supreme Head of State of the Federation of Malaya with the title of Timbalan Yang di-Pertuan Agong, 3rd August 1957. Installed at Istana Negara, Kuala Lumpur, 2nd September 1957. Became King of the Federation of Malaya with the title of Yang di-Pertuan Agung on the death of the incumbent, 1st April 1960.
