Appointed as Heir Apprent by his father, 14th June 1624. Raised to the title of Dejazmatch 1627, Governor of Semien 1627-1632. Succeeded on the abdication of his father, 14th June 1632. Crowned as ‘Alam Seggad (‘He to whom the world bows’), at the Cathedral of St Mary of Zion, Axum, September 1632. Removed his capital to Gondar in 1636. m. Woizero Ihata Krestos (d. before 8th September 1662, bur. Arwa Mariam Church, Masraha island, Lake Tana), daughter of Aqorewos, of Walaqa, a descendant of Tasfa Mikael, by his wife, a daughter of Emperor Saifu Ar’ad. m. (i) Woizero Zeliha, elder sister of Meliha, supposed daughter of the ‘King of Rome’. m. (ii) Woizero Meliha, younger sister of Zeliha, supposed daughter of the ‘King of Rome’. m. (iii) Woizero Sabla Wangal [H.M. Empress A’alaf Mogassa] (m. second, October 1667, H.M. Elect of God, Emperor A’alaf Seggad [Sadiqu Yohannes Qedus Za Tadda] [Yohannes I], King of Kings of Ethiopia, her step-son, and d. at Hamad Bar, 13th January 1690, bur. Arwa Mariam Church, Masraha island, Lake Tana – see below), daughter of Prince Gabre Maskal, of the Madabay, by his wife, a sister (or half-sister) of Emperor ‘Alam Seggad [Sultan Seggad II]. He d. at the Fasil Gemb, Gondar, 18th October 1667 (bur. at Ganata Iyasus
Church, Azzazo, later transferred to St Stephen’s Monastery, Daga, Lake Tana), having had issue, at least forty-eight sons (of whom 44 survived after 1694) and several daughters:
