Shaikh Salim I bin Mubarak Al-Sabah, Shaikh of Kuwait and dependencies, CSI, by his wife, Shaikha Mariam bint Jarrah Al-Sabah, daughter of Shaikh Jarrah bin Sabah Al-Sabah, educ. privately. Regent from the death of his father, 22^ndFebruary until the election of Shaikh Ahmad, 29^th March 1921. Presdt Advisory Council 1938-1955. Succeeded on the death of his cousin, 29^thJanuary 1950. Installed at Kuwait City, 25^th February 1950. Attended the Coronation of H.M. Queen Elizabeth II at Westminster Abbey in London, 1953. Signed a new Treaty of with the United Kingdom which recognised the full independence and sovereignty of Kuwait, 19^th June 1961. Faced an armed invasion, following the claim to Kuwait by the Iraqi dictator Qasim, six days later. Introduced a Constituion in 1962, followed by an elected National Assembly in 1963.
