Regent from the death of his father, 22nd February until the election of Shaikh Ahmad, 29th March 1921. Presdt Advisory Council 1938-1955. Succeeded on the death of his cousin, 29th January 1950. Installed at Kuwait City, 25th February 1950. Attended the Coronation of H.M. Queen Elizabeth II at Westminster Abbey in London, 1953. Signed a new Treaty of with the United Kingdom which recognised the full independence and sovereignty of Kuwait, 19th June 1961. Faced an armed invasion, following the claim to Kuwait by the Iraqi dictator Qasim, six days later. Introduced a Constituion in 1962, followed by an elected National Assembly in 1963.
