1950 - 1965 H.H. Shaikh ‘Abdu’llah III bin Salim Al-Sabah, Amir of the State of Kuwait, GCMG (13.10.1959, KCMG 5.6.1952), CIE (1.1.1938), Assoc. KStJ (16.5.1956). b. at Kuwait, 1895, son of H.E. Shaikh Salim I bin Mubarak Al-Sabah, Shaikh of Kuwait and dependencies, CSI, by his wife, Shaikha Mariam bint Jarah, daughter of Shaikh Jarah bin Sabah II, educ. privately. Regent from the death of his father, 22nd February until the election of Shaikh Ahmad, 29th March 1921. Presdt Advisory Council 1938-1955. Succeeded on the death of his cousin, 29th January 1950. Installed at Kuwait City, 25th February 1950. Attended the Coronation of H.M. Queen Elizabeth II at Westminster Abbey in London, 1953. Signed a new Treaty of with the United Kingdom which recognised the full independence and sovereignty of Kuwait, 19th June 1961. Faced an armed invasion, following the claim to Kuwait by the Iraqi dictator Qasim, six days later. Introduced a Constituion in 1962, followed by an elected National Assembly in 1963. Rcvd: Coron Medals (1937 & 1953), GC of he Order of the Legion of Honour of France, the Order of Al-Rafidian 1st class of Iraq (30.3.1952), and the Order of the Crown of Iran 1st class (2.8.1958). m. (first) (sep.) at the Seif Palace, Kuwait, 17th May 1908, H.E. Shaikha Mariam bint Jabir Al-‘Ali Al-Sabah (b. 1895; 4th March 1983), daughter of H.E. Shaikh Jabir II bin Mubarak Al-Sabah, Shaikh of Kuwait and dependencies, CSI, by his wife, Shaikha Shekha bint ‘Abdu’llah Al-Sabah, daughter of H.E. Shaikh ‘Abdu’llah II Pasha Al-Sabah, Shaikh of Kuwait. m. (second) (sep.) Shaikha Bazza bint Nasir Al-Sabah (d.s.p.), daughter of H.E. Shaikh Nasir Pasha Al-Sabah. m. (third) Shaikha Nasima bint Hamad Al-Sabah (d.s.p.), daughter of H.E. Shaikh Hamad bin Mubarak Al-Sabah, Deputy Ruler of Kuwait. m. (fourth) Heidi Dichter, a German lady. m (a) Jamila, an African lady. m. (b) Butle. He d. from heart failure, at the Dasman Palace, Kuwait City, 24th November 1965, having had issue, three sons and three daughters:

Cdt Kuwait Police 1938-1955, Presdt Police Dept 1953-1959, Mbr Supreme Council 1955-1961, Presdt Public Health Dept 1959-1961, and Foreign Affairs Dept 1961-1962, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs 1962-1963, Prime Minister 1963-1965. Appointed as Heir Apparent with the title of Crown Prince and style of His Highness, 29th October 1962. Succeeded on the death of his half-brother, 24th November 1965. Installed at Kuwait City, 27th November 1965. m. (first) at Kuwait, 1936, Munira, daughter of Fahad Al-Adwani. m. (second) at Kuwait City, 24th January 1943, H.E. Shaikha Nuria bint Ahmad Al-Sabah, daughter of H.H. Shaikh Ahmad I bin Jabir Al-‘Ali Al-Sabah, Shaikh of Kuwait and dependencies, KCSI, KCIE, by his wife, Wadha, former wife of Shaikh ‘Ali bin Salim Al-Sabah, of the Al-Duwai‘a tribe in Ajman. He d. from cancer, at Kuwait City, 31st December 1977, having had issue, five sons and seven daughters:
