Shaikh Salim I bin Mubarak Al-Sabah, Shaikh of Kuwait and dependencies, CSI, educ. Al-Mubarakiya, Al-Ahmadiya, and Al-Sharqiya Schs, Kuwait City. Chief of Public Security at Ahmadi City 1949-1959, Mbr Supreme Council1955-1977, Presdt Finance and Government Lands Dept 1959-1961 (conc responsible for the Office of Oil Affairs and Housing), Minister for Finance 1961-1965, Minister for the Economy 1961-1963, Industry 1963-1965, and Trade 1965, Deputy Prime Minister and Vice-Presdt Council of Ministers 1963-1965, Prime Minister & Presdt Council of Ministers 1965-1977. Appointed as Heir Apparent with the title of Crown Prince and the style of His Highness, 31st May 1966. Succeeded on the death of his cousin and maternal uncle as Amir of the State of Kuwait, 31st December 1977. Went into exile when Iraq invaded Kuwait 1990. Returned from exile and resumed direct control of affairs from his military governor 14th March 1991. Presdt Kuwait Monetary Council 1961-1965. Chair Kuwait Development Fund 1961-1977. Shaikh ‘Abdu’llah bin Salim Al-Sabah, Amir of the State of Kuwait, GCMG, CIE, KStJ, by Jamila, an African lady, educ. Mubarakiya Sch, Kuwait City and Metropolitan Police Coll, Hendon. Joined Kuwait Police 1945, Deputy Chief of Kuwait City Police 1954-1959, Mbr Supreme Council 1955-1961, Presdt Police and Public Security Dept 1961-1962 (Deputy Dir 1959-1961), Minister for the Interior 1962-1978, and Defence 1965-1978, Prime Minister 1978-1991 and 1992-2003, Military Governor of Kuwait February to 14th March 1991, Presdt Supreme Defence Council, the Supreme Petroleum Council, the Civil Service Commission and the Higher Council of Housing. Appointed as Heir Apparent with the title of Crown Prince and the style of His Highness, 31st January 1978. Succeeded on the death of his cousin as Amir of the State of Kuwait, 15th January 2006. Forced into abdicating on the grounds of ill health, 24th January 2006. Thereafter styled as His Highness the Amir Father. m. 1948, H.H. Shaikha Latifa bint Fahad Al-Sabah, Chair Union of Kuwaiti Women’s Socs, Kuwaiti Women's Volunteer Soc. for Community Services, Intl. Marine & Petroleum Co., etc., daughter of his uncle, H.E. Shaikh Fahad bin Salim Al-Sabah, sometime Minister for Finance, by his wife, Fatima Gargaj. He d. at Kuwait City, 13th May 2008, having had issue, one son and five daughters:
