1835 - 1857 H.H. Paduka Sri Sultan Mahmud IV Muzaffar Shah ibni al-Marhum Sultan Muhammad Mu’azzam Shah, Sultan and Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Lingga, Riau and dependencies. b. at Kuala Trengganu, September 1823, eldest son of H.H. Paduka Sri Sultan Muhammad II Mu’azzam Shah ibni al-Marhum Sultan ‘Abdu’l-Rahman Mu’azzam Shah, Sultan and Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Lingga, Riau and dependencies, by his first wife, H.H. Tengku Kulsum Puteh binti al-Marhum Sultan Ahmad Shah, Tengku Besar Perempuan, educ. privately. Appointed as Heir Apparent with the title of Tengku Besar, 1832. Succeeded on the abdication of his father, 1835. Reigned under the regency of his father until his death, 20th July 1841. Deposed by the Dutch authorities, while in Singapore, 7th October 1857. Settled in Pahang and then moved to Bangkok in 1861. Served as the Siamese Governor of Trengganu and Kelantan 1862-1863. m. (first) at Lingga, July 1837, H.H. Tengku Maimuna binti Tunku Muhammad, Tengku Ampuan (cre. 1837), daughter of Y.A.M. Tengku Muhammad Hitam ibni al-Marhum Sultan Husain Mu’azzam Shah, Tengku Besar Selat, of Johor-Singapore, by his wife, Y.M. Encik Wan Aisha binti Tengku Temenggong ‘Abdu’l Rahman, Tengku Ampuan Besar, third daughter of H.H. Daing ‘Abdu’l Rahman bin Tengku Temenggong ‘Abdu’l Hamid, Tengku Temenggong Sri Maharaja, of Johor. m. (second) 1842, Encik Sajah, a widow of his father, H.H. Paduka Sri Sultan Muhammad II Mu’azzam Shah ibni al-Marhum Sultan ‘Abdu’l-Rahman Mu’azzam Shah, Sultan of Lingga. m. (third) 10th April 1846, H.H. Raja Maimuna binti Raja ‘Abdu’l Rahman [Mai], Raja Ampuan (d.s.p.), third daughter of H.H. Paduka Sri Raja ‘Abdu’l Rahman ibni al-Marhum Sultan Ja’afar ‘Ala ud-din Shah, Yang di-Pertuan Muda of Riau, by his chief wife, H.H. Raja Fatima binti Raja Idris, daughter of Y.M. Raja Idris bin Raja Haji. m. (fourth?) 1858, Y.M. Encik Engku Ngah binti Dato’ Bendahara Sri Maharaja Tun Muhammad Tahir, Encik Engku Puan, daughter of H.H. Sri Paduka Tun Muhammad Tahir bin Dato’ Bendahara Sri Maharaja Tun Ali [Bendahara Tua], Dato’ Bendahara Sri Maharaja of Pahang, by his wife, Y.A.M. Tunku Chik binti al-Marhum Sultan Ahmad Taj ud-din Halim Shah, daughter of H.H. Maulana Paduka Sri Sultan Ahmad Taj ud-din Halim Shah I ibni al-Marhum ‘Abdu’llah al-Mukarram Shah, Sultan of Kedah. m. (fifth) before 18th June 1861, a daughter of H.H. Sri Paduka Baginda Tuanku Sultan ‘Umar ibni al-Marhum Sultan Ahmad Shah [al-Marhum Baginda], Sultan and Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Trengganu. He d. at Kuala Pahang, 10th July 1864 (bur. there at the Royal Cemetery, Kampung Marhum), having had issue, two sons and one daughter:
