The Deora Dynasty

GENEALOGY

1228 - 1250 Kunwar Shri Pratap [Deoraj], son of Kunwar Shri Maha Singh [Man Singh I], younger son of Rao Shri Udai Singh Chauhan, of Jalor. Founder of the Sirohi line, after whom the sept takes its name of Deora. He d. 1250, having had issue:

1) Rao Shri Vijayraji [Bijad], Rao Sahib of Mandar and Badgaon - see below.

1250 - 1301 Rao Shri Vijayraji [Bijad], Rao Sahib of Mandar and Badgaon, son of Rao Deoraj. He succeeded his father as head of the sept ca. 1250, acquired Mandar (in Sirohi territory) and Badgaon (in Jodhpur), thus founding the basis of the Sirohi principality. He d. at Mandar, having had issue:

1) Rao Shri Lumbha, Rao of Arbudaranya - see below.

1301 - 1321 Rao Shri Lumbha, Rao of Arbudaranya, son of Rao Vijayraj and grandson of Rao Shri Deoraj, educ. privately. Succeeded his father as ruler of Mandar and Badgaon, 1301. He seized Mount Abu from Raja Hoon Parmar and established his rule over the region known as Arbudaranya (modern Sirohi) in 1311. Established his capital at Chandravati in 1320. He d. at Chandravati, 1321, having had issue:

1) Rao Shri Tej Singh, Rao Sahib of Arbudaranya - see below.

1321 - 1336 Rao Shri Tej Singh, Rao Sahib of Arbudaranya, son of Rao Shri Lumbha, Rao of Arbudaranya, educ. privately. Succeeded on the death of his father, 1321. He d. at Chandravati, 1336, having had issue:

1) Rao Shri Kanhar Deo, Rao Sahib of Arbudaranya - see below.

1336 - 1343 Rao Shri Kanhar Deo, Rao Sahib of Arbudaranya, son of Rao Shri Tej Singh, Rao Sahib of Arbudaranya, educ. privately. Succeeded on the death of his father, 1336. The construction of the famous Vashistha Temple took place during his reign, and his statute remains a prominent feature of the Achaleshwar Temple on Mount Abu. He d. 1343.

1343 - 1345 Rao Shri Samant Singh, Rao Sahib of Arbudaranya.

1345 - 1347 Rao Shri Salakha, Rao Sahib of Arbudaranya. He d. 1347, having had issue:

1) Rao Shri Rar Mal, Rao Sahib of Arbudaranya - see below.

1347 - 1392 Rao Shri Rar Mal [Ran Mal], Rao Sahib of Arbudaranya, son of Rao Shri Salakha, Rao Sahib of Arbudaranya, educ. privately. Succeeded on the death of his father, 1347. Founded old Sirohi in 1347. Ancestor of the Lakhawat, Dungrawat, Tejawat and Bajawat clans in Sirohi. He had issue, two sons:

1) Rao Shri Shivbhan, Rao Sahib of Arbudaranya - se below.
2) Raj Sahiban Shri Gaj Singhji. He had issue:
- a) Thakuran Raj Shri Dungar Singhji [Dungarji]. Founder of the Dungrawat sept of Padiv, Kalandri, Motagaon, Jawal, Rewara and Mandwara. He had issue:
  - i) Thakuran Raj Shri Alam Singhji. He had issue:
    - (1) Thakuran Raj Shri Udai Singhji. He had issue:
      - (a) Thakuran Raj Shri Haraj Singhji. He had issue, a son:
        
        (i) Thakuran Raj Shri Bija Singh, who assumed power as Maharao Shri Bija Singhji, Rao of Sirohi- see below.

1392 - 1424 Rao Shri Shivbhan [Sheobhaji] [Sobha], Rao Sahib of Arbudaranya, elder son of Rao Shri Rar Mal, Rao Sahib of Arbudaranya, educ. privately. Succeeded on the death of his father, 1392. Founded a new capital at Shivpuri, in the Siranava Hills, in 1405. He d. at Shivpuri, 1424, having had issue:

1) Rao Shri Sahas Mal, Rao Sahib of Sirohi - see below.

1424 - 1451 Rao Shri Sahas Mal [Sainsmal], Rao Sahib of Sirohi, son of Rao Shri Shivbhan, Rao Sahib of Arbudaranya, educ. privately. Succeeded on the death of his father, 1424. Abandoned his capital at Shivpuri and founded a new capital at Sirohi in April 1425, from whence the state took that name. He drove out the Solankis from Mal Magra and greatly extended the size of his principality. He also gave refuge to Maharana Kumbha, on Mount Abu, in 1437 but he settled in and refused to leave, building the forts of Achalgarh and Basantgarh. He d. 1451, having had issue, a son:

1) Rao Shri Lakhaji, Rao Sahib of Sirohi - see below.

1451 - 1483 Rao Shri Lakhaji, Rao Sahib of Sirohi, son of Rao Shri Sahas Mal, Rao Sahib of Sirohi, educ. privately. Succeeded on the death of his father, 1451. He entered into an alliance with Qutb ud-din and succeeded in finally expelling Maharana Kumbha and recovering Achalgarh, in 1457. He constructed the Kalika Maata Temple, the Lakhelav pond, and statue of Hanumana at Sarneshwar. He d. 1483, having had issue, six sons (ancestors of the Lakhawat families of Manadar, Nibaj, Rohera and Dalani):

1) Maharao Shri Jagmal I, Rao Sahib of Sirohi - see below.
2) Raj Sahiban Shri Hamir Singhji. Granted a huge number of jagirs by his father, totalling almost one half of the entire extent of the state. Quarrelled with his elder brother and attempted to usurp the throne. He was k. by Rao Jagmal, ca. 1490 (when his estates were resumed), having had issue, three sons, including:
- a) Deora Rana Rao, of Dhori and Pawti, educ. privately. Granted a small portion of his father's former estates. He d.s.p.m.
3) Raj Sahiban Shri Shankar Singh, of Santpur. He d.s.p.m.
4) Raj Sahiban Shri Udai Singhji, of Nandia. He had issue:
- a) Thakuran Raj Shri Randhir Singh, of Nandia. He had issue:
  - i) Thakuran Raj Shri Pratap Singh (uncle of Surtan). He had issue:
    - (1) Thakuran Raj Shri Tej Singh, of Bhatana. Musahib Ala (Chief Minister) of Sirohi. Founder of the Tejawat sept.
    - (2) Thakuran Raj Shri Sardul Singh, of Dhori and Pawti. Granted his estates as the adopted son of Deora Rana Rao.
  - ii) Thakuran Raj Shri Suja Singh [Sooja], of Palri (uncle of Surtan). Granted Palri in jagir 1577. He had issue, a son:
    - (1) Thakuran Raj Shri Prithvi Raj, of Nibaj. Musahib Ala to his cousin, Maharao Surtan. Granted Nibaj in jagir. He was k. by the Maharao while in a state of intoxication, 1633, having had issue. He left a descendant.
  - iii) …Singhji. He had issue, a son:
    - (1) Kunwar Shri Surtan Singh, who succeeded as Maharao Shri Surtan Singhji, Rao Sahib of Sirohi - see below.
- b) Thakuran Raj Shri Samant Singhji. He had issue:

        a. Thakuran Raj Shri Karam Singh, of Rohua. Granted Rohua in jagir 1813. Rebelled against the Maharao and placed himself under the protection of Palanpur 1817. Surrendered to the British and returned to Sirohi 1823. He d. 1844, having had issue, a son:
        
        i. …Singhji. He had issue:
        
        1a. Thakuran Raj Shri Umed Singh, of Rohua. Succeeded his grandfather, 1844. Rebelled against the Maharao in 1848 and fled into the hills. Joined the mutineers and attacked Mount Abu 21^st August 1857. m. Thakuran Rani Shri Ratan Kunwar. He d.s.p. before 8^th May 1861.
