1949 - 1960 H.H. Shaikh ‘Ali bin ‘Abdu’llah Al-Thani, Ruler of Qatar, KBE (c. 13.8.1958). b. at Doha, before 25th June 1895, eldest son of H.E. Shaikh ‘Abdu’llah bin Jasim Al-Thani, Ruler of Qatar, CIE, by his first wife, Shaikha Mariam bint ‘Abdu’llah al-Attiya, educ. privately. Appointed as Heir Apparent and Deputy Ruler of Qatar by his father, 30th June 1948. Succeeded on his abdication, and installed on the same day at Doha, 20th August 1949. His reign saw the establishment of the first regular school for boys, the first school for girls, the funding of university places, the first shipments of oil and the construction of the first permanent hospital. He also oversaw the construction of the airport, roads, water, electricity and port facilities, the establishment of government departments and ministries, and the first joint stock companies. He was also the first Qatari ruler to tour abroad, visitng India, Egypt, Europe, and the Levant. However, simmering discontent over his personal spending habits and accumulating debts, induced him into abdicating in favour of his second son, 24th October 1960. Thereafter, he resided abroad on the shores of Lake Geneva, Switzerland, during the summer and Beirut, Lebanon, during the winter. Rcvd: Queen Elizabeth II Coron Medal (1953). m. (first) (div. without issue) a daughter (m. second, her former husband’s younger brother, Shaikh Hamad bin ‘Abdu’llah Al-Thani, and had two sons - see above) of Shaikh Muhammad bin Khalifa al-Suwaidi. m. (second) 22nd March 1951, a daughter of Shaikh ‘Abdu’llah al-Attiya. m. (third) at Dubai, March 1958, … He d. at the Barbir Hospital, Beirut, Lebanon, 31st August 1974 (bur. Al-Rayyan Cemetery, Doha, Qatar), having had issue, eleven sons and three daughters:

1960 - 1972 H.H. Shaikh Ahmad bin ‘Ali Al-Thani, Amir of the State of Qatar. b. at Doha, before 4th September 1921, second son of H.H. Shaikh ‘Ali bin ‘Abdu’llah Al-Thani, Ruler of Qatar, KBE, educ. privately. Succeeded on the abdication of his father, and installed at the Rayan Palace, Doha, 24th October 1960. Promulgated the first Constitution of Qatar on 2nd April 1970 and installed the first Council of Ministers on 28th May 1970. Assumed the style and title of Amir of the State of Qatar when Qatar was granted full independence, 3rd September 1971. Deposed in favour of his cousin, 22nd February 1972. Settled in Dubai. Attended the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II at Westminster Abbey in London, 1953. Rcvd: Collar of the Order of the Nile of Egypt (27.7.1961), Queen Elizabeth II Coron Medal (1953), etc. m. (first) Shaikha Hessa bint Hamad Al-Thani, daughter of Shaikh Hamad bin ‘Abdu’llah bin Jasim Al-Thani. m. (second) 4th August 1950, a daughter of Falah bin Khalid. m. (third) 11th February 1953, a daughter of Shaikh Fahad bin Jasim Al-Thani. m. (fourth) at Dubai, 9th October 1957, Shaikha Mariam bint Rashid al-Maktum, daughter of H.H. Shaikh Rashid bin Sa’id al-Maktum, Shaikh of Dubai, GCMG, sometime Vice-Presdt of the UAE, by his wife, H.H. Shaikha Latifa bint Hamdan al-Nahayan, daughter of H.E. Shaikh Hamdan bin Zaid al-Nahayan, Shaikh of Abu Dhabi. He d. at London, 25th November 1977 (bur. Al-Rayyan Cemetery, Doha), having had issue, seven sons and one daughter:
