1843 - 1859 Sayyid Muhammad bin ‘Ali al-Sanussi al-Khattabi al-Mujahiri al-Idrisi al-Hasani, 1st Grand Sanussi. b. at al-Wasita, near Mustaghanim, Algeria, 22nd December 1787, educ. Qaraqiyin Mosque-Univ, Fez, Morocco, at Mecca and at Medina, Arabia. Established the Sanussi Order near Mecca in 1837 but being unable to return to Algeria because of the French occupation, set up his seat at Jaghbub, Cyrenaica, 1843. m. (first) (div. 1835) Minna, daughter of Muhammad bin ‘Abdu’l Rahman Laghaout, by whom he had issue, one son. m. (second) at Abu Qubais, 1834, Khadija (d. at Mecca, ca. 1846), daughter of Hamid al-Habashaya, by whom he had issue, two sons and four daughters, who all died young. m. (third) at al-Bayda, February 1843, Fatima (d. at Jaghbub,, 1892), daughter of Ahmad bin Farajallah al-Fituri, by whom he had issue, two sons. m. (fourth) 1850/1851, Fatima (b. ca. 1811; d. at Jaghbub, 1861, bur. there), daughter of Hasan al-Biskri, by whom he had issue, one son. He d. at Jaghbub, 7th September 1859 (bur. at the Mosque there, exhumed and dumped in the dessert on the orders of Khadafy in 1984), having had issue, including:
