Sampeyan Dalam ingkang Sinuhun Kanjeng Sri Sultan Amangku Buwana VIII Senapati ing Alaga Ngah 'Abdu'l-Rahman Saiyid ud-din Panatagama Khalifatu'llah ingkang Yumeneng Kaping, Sultan of Yogyakarta. b. at Kraton Yogyakarta Adiningrat, 3rd March 1880, ninth son of Major-General H.H. Sultan Amangku Buwana VII [Sultan Ngabehi], Sultan of Yogyakarta, by his second wife, Gusti Kanjeng Ratu Mas, educ. privately. Appointed as Heir Apparent with the title of Kanjeng Gusti Pangeran Adipati Anum Amangku Negara Sudibya Rajaputra Nalendra ing Mataram, July 1914. Succeeded on the abdication of his father, 29th January 1921. Installed at the Kraton, Yogyakarta, 8th February 1921. Maj-Gen. KNIL (8/2/1921). Sampeyan Dalem ingkang Sinuhun Kanjeng Sri Sultan Amangku Buwana VIII Senapati ing Alaga ĎAbduíl-Rahman Saiyid ud-din Panatagama Khalifatuíllah, Sultan of Yogyakarta, by his fourth wife, Radin Ajeng Kustilah/Kanjeng Radin Ayu Adipati Anum Amangku Negara/Kanjeng Ratu Alit, educ. Frobel Sch, Eerste Europese Lagere (ELS) and Neutrale Europese Lagere Schs., Yogyakarta, Hogere Burger Schs (HBS) in Semarang and Bintang, the Gymmnasium, Haarlem, and the State Univ, Leiden (BA 1937), the Netherlands. Appointed as Heir Apparent with the title of Kanjeng Gusti Pangeran Adipati Anum Amangku Negara Sudibya Rajaputra Nalendra ing Mataram, 1915. Attended the Golden Jubilee Celebrations of Queen Wilhelmina, in Amsterdam, 1938. Succeeded on the death of his father, 22nd October 1939. Installed at Kraton Yogyakarta, 18th March 1940. Confirmed as ruler by the President of the Indonesian Republic, 19th August 1945. Proclaimed his realm to be part of the territories of the Republic, 10th September 1945. He d. at the Hotel Embassy Row, Washington DC, 2nd October 1988 (bur. Imagiri), having had issue, fifteen sons and seven daughters:
