GENEALOGY
1844 - 1905 H.H. Rai Rayan Mahimahendra Maharawalji Sahib Shri Lakshman Singhji Sahib Bahadur, Naresh Rajya, Maharawal of Banswara. b. at Banswara, 30th January 1838, son of Thakur Shri Bakhtawar Singh, of Surpur, educ. privately. Adopted by his childless cousin Maharawalji Sahib Shri Bahadur Singhji and appointed as his Heir Apparent with the title of Maharaj Raj Kumar Shri Lakshman Singhji Sahib, Yuvaraj Sahib of Banswara, 27th November 1838. Succeeded on the death of his adopted father, 2nd February 1844. Installed on the gadi, at Moti Mahal, Banswara, 17th February 1844. Reigned under a Council of Regency until he came of age and was invested with full ruling powers, 1856. Granted a permanent salute of 15-guns in 1867, but this was reduced to 11-guns in punishment for his part in invading and attacking his neighbours 1st August 1869. The state salute was restored to 15-guns in 1878, but his personal right to the salute remained at 11-guns until eventually restored to 15-guns in February 1880. The difficulties faced by the state during the famine of 1900 and the subsequent financial burdens that followed, necessitated government intervention and the appointment of a Council of Administration supervised by the British Political Officer. Nevertheless, the Maharawal is credited with establishing the first formal school, and postal service, and cooperating in the establishment of railway communications, although the railway project did not eventuate. He also built the Jal Vilas Mahal in Bai Talab, Shahr Vilas in the capital, Ajab Vilas, Vasant Mahal, Lakshman Mahal, Ranjit Vilas, Sukhritu Vilas, Amarsukh Vilas, Champa Mahal, Nazar Mahal, Sheesh Mahal and Kushalbagh palaces. He also constructed the Raj Rajeshwar Shivaite temple in Kushalbagh, Bakhteshwar Shivalaya and Bakhtabav Baoli in Vanala. To increase trade in the state, he established of Raj Rajeshwar fair in Banswara, a new system of weights and measures and created a symbolic script called Rajarajeshwari. m. (first) H.H. Shrimathi Bada Rehwarjisa Maharani Lal Kunwar Sahiba, daughter of Thakore Shri Jowansinhji [Jowun Sing], Thakore of Bolundra, in Sabarkantha. m. (fifth) H.H. Shrimathi Bhatianijisa Maharani Sahiba, daughter of Thakur Zorawar Singh, of Sarwan. m. (sixth) H.H. Shrimathi Bada Vagheljisa Maharani Sahiba [Idaraniji Mota Maji Sahib] (d. at Banswara Palace, 13th May 1936), daughter of Thakur Partab Singh, of Poshina, under Idar. m. (seventh) H.H. Shrimathi Ladi Vagheljisa Maharani Gulab Kunwar Sahiba, daughter of Kumar Shri Kodar Singh [Kodarji], of Pethapur, in Mahi Kantha. m. (eighth) H.H. Shrimathi Reverjisa Ladi Bordera Maharani Jevar Kunwar Sahiba, daughter of Thakore Sher Singh, of Bordera, in Gujarat. m. (ninth) H.H. Shrimathi Tija Vagheljisa Maharani Sahiba, another daughter of Kumar Shri Kodar Singh [Kodarji], of Pethapur. m. (tenth) H.H. Shrimathi Ladi Chauhanjisa Maharani Shringar Kunwar Sahiba [Dhora Dadisa], daughter of the Thakur of Mhotagam, under Banswara. m. (eleventh) H.H. Shrimathi Tija Chauhanijisa Maharani Sahiba, a daughter of Thakur Sardar Singh, Thakur of Molan, under Banswara. m. (twelfth) H.H. Shrimathi Chhota Bodera Maharani Sahiba, daughter of Thakore Ghulab Singh, of Bordera, in Gujarat. m. (thirteenth) H.H. Shrimathi Chhota Rehwarjisa Maharani Naval Kunwar Sahiba, daughter of Thakore Pratapsinhji Himatsinhji, Thakore of Rupal, in Gujarat. He d. at Banswara Palace, 29th April 1905, having had issue, eight sons:
1905 - 1913 H.H. Rai Rayan Mahimahendra Maharawalji Sahib Shri Shumbhu Singhji Sahib Bahadur, Naresh Rajya, Maharawal of Banswara. b. at Banswara Palace, 14th October 1868, eldest son of H.H. Rai Rayan Mahimahendra Maharawalji Sahib Shri Lakshman Singh Bahadur, Naresh Rajya, Maharawal of Banswara, by his fourth wife, H.H. Shrimathi Rehwarji Maharani Lal Kunwar Sahiba, daughter of Thakore Shri Jowansinhji [Jowun Sing], Thakore of Bolundra, in Sabarkantha, educ. privately. Succeeded on the death of his father, 29th April 1905. Ascended the gadi at the Durrih Khana, Banswara Palace, 30th April 1905. Formally installed there, 9th May 1905. Continued to reign under supervision until the termination of these arrangements, when he was invested with full ruling powers, at the Durrih Khana, Banswara Palace, 11th January 1906. He abdicated his administrative responsibility to his eldest son and heir in September 1908, retaining all the honours, status and perquisites of a ruler and head of the state. His reign saw the first important administrative reforms, including the establishment of a regular police force, State Bank, municipal board and public works department, more vernacular schools, English language medium schools, the telegraph, and a public library. Although these were actually the product of a diligent administrator in the person of Yuvaraj Prithvi Singhji and the supervisory administration that preceded him.
