1583 - 1590 After the death of Maharawalji Man Singh, a feudatory chief named Thakur Man Singh Chauhan established himself as ruler without authority. Maharawal Sahas Mal invaded and forced him to surrender authority to Agar Singh [Ugra Sen] ca 1590. However, the Thakur went to Emperor Akbar who granted him a firman restoring Banswara to his rule. Although Ugra Sen took to the hills, he returned and had Man Singh murdered at Burhanpur, once the Imperial forces had departed for Malwa.
The official state version of the genealogy, as presented for publication in “Chiefs and Leading Families in Rajputana” and other sources glosses over this episode completely. Neither Maharawal Man Singh nor his namesake and usurper, Thakur Man Singh Chauhan, find mention anywhere in these texts. Furthermore, Agar Singhji [Ugra Sen]’s father and grandfather, Kalyan Singh and Khanadeo, are both presented as if they were themselves rulers, enjoyed the title of Maharawal and were direct descendants of Man Singh’s father, Pratap Singh. The subterfuge made easier for the reader to digest by the complete omission of any dates before the reign of Udai Singhji II. This is in complete contrast to the historical narrative as published by Ohja and others.
