Raised to the gadi after the assassination of his cousin, 1765. Defeated by the Deb Raja of Bhutan in 1770, and carried off as a prisoner to Punakh, in Bhutan. Succeed for a second time, following the death of his only son, 1775. Granted a sanad by the Governor-General of Bengal recognising him as successor to the zamindari of Chaklajat and Sarkar of Cooch Behar, 13th February 1776). However, he refused to take part in the administration or in any important affairs of state, spending much of his time on religious duties and on pilgrimage to various parts of India. m. 1783 - 1840 Sri Sri Maharaj Harendra Narayan Bhup Bahadur, Raja of Cooch Behar. b. at the Royal Palace (Rajbari), Behar, before 12th March 1780, younger son of Sri Sriman Maharaja Dhairyendra Narayan Bhup Bahadur, Raja of Cooch Behar, educ. privately. Appointed as Heir Apparent by his father, 29th November 1783. Succeeded on the death of his father, 1st December 1783. Installed on the gadi after a considerable delay, owing to the Khagendra Narayan Nazir Deo’s intention of raising his own son onto the throne. Reigned under a regency headed by his step-mother, the Rajamma, and Guru Deo Sarbanand, until arrested and imprisoned by him. He was eventually freed after the British sent in two companies of troops, removed the Nazir Deo, and appointed a Commission of Administration, April 1784. Granted a sanad for the Chaklajat zamindari 1784. Came of age and assumed full ruling powers in 1801. Carefully educated by private tutors supervised by Henry Douglas, he was the first of his line to receive a modern education. Learned in Sanskrit, Bengali and Persian, poet, artist, musician and author of several tomes, including “Brihatdharma Puran”, “Upakatha” (1803), “Skandha Puran”, “Rajputra Upakhan”, “Krishna Yogsar”, “Ramayan Sundar Kanda” and “Mahabharat Oishik Parba”. King’s Coll, Cambridge, Bar-at-Law, fourth son of Rai Sahib Nihal Chand Batra, by his wife, Srimathi Satbrahwan. She d. 11th August 1981, having had issue, two sons and one daughter.
3) Sri Sri Rajkumar Mahendra Narayan [Depur Singh] (illegit), educ. privately. First Regent during his father’s absence in Benares 1836-1839, Judge of the Court of Sessions 1839-1840, Chief Judge of the Fauzdari Court 1840-1845, Sarvarahakar 1845-1847. He d. 30th March 1847, having had issue, one son and several daughters, including:
a) Rajkumar Sri Bhubanendra Narayan. b. after 1837. He had issue, one son:

Joint Administrator of the State during his father’s absence in Benares 1836-1839 and Sarvarahakar for his natural son from 30th March 1847 until his death. Regarded himself as the true claimant to the throne, and apparently the only legitimate son. He d. at Cooch Behar, 1857, having had issue, four sons:

Chief Justice and Presdt of the Fauzdari, Circuit, Adawlat and Appeal Courts during his father’s lifetime. Second Regent during his father’s absence in Benares 1836-1839. Succeeded on the death of his father, 29th March 1840. Installed on the gadi at the Royal Palace (Rajbhari), Old Behar, 11th April 1840. A skilled administrator, he ably improved the conditions of his people to such an extent that the population and agricultural cultivation increased considerably during his reign, boosting revenues and restoring the finances to a healthy condition. m. 1847 - 1863 H.H. Sri Sriman Maharaja Narendra Narayan Bhup Bahadur, Maharaja of Cooch Behar. b. at Cooch Behar, August 1841, as Kumar Sri Chandra Narayan, fourth and youngest son of Sri Sri Rajkumar Brajendra Narayan, sometime Joint Administrator of the state, educ. Government Coll, Kishnanagar, Nadia, and the Court of Ward’s Institution, Calcutta, Bengal. Adopted by Maharaj Shivendra Narayan and renamed Narendra Narayan, 11th March 1845. Succeeded on the death of his adoptive father and ascended the gadi on the same day, at Cooch Behar Palace, Benares, 23rd August 1847. Reigned under the regency of his natural father and adoptive mothers. Came of age and invested with full ruling powers, at the Cooch Behar Royal Palace (Rajbhari), August 1859. Granted the personal title of Maharaja Bahadur together with the style of His Highness, 1862. Received a sanad of adoption which included a formal recognition that Cooch Behar was a princely state, 11th March 1862. A modern and enlightened ruler, he established the first English language high school in his capital, constructed roads and bridges, improved the administration and placed the finances of the state on a secure footing. 1) Sri Sri Maharajkumari Ananda Mayi Devi [Sri Sri Rani Ananda Mayi Devi, Rani of Panga]. b. at Dhaliyabari Palace, Ratnapet, Cooch Behar, 18th July 1860 (d/o Nistarini Devati), educ. privately. Succeeded her husband as zamindarin of the Panga raj, and bequeathed the same to her half-brother by will dated 14th February 1887. The will was disputed by Rani Lakshmi Priya, the adopted grandmother of Raja Jogendra. The courts ordered a division of the raj between them. m. at Dhaliyabari Palace, Ratnapet, Cooch Behar, 20th January 1868, Sri Sri Raja Jogendra Narayan, Raja of Panga (d.s.p. of cholera at Calcutta, Bengal, 1869), adopted son of Sri Sri Raja Gajendra Narayan, Raja of Panga.
