Maharajadhiraja Narendra Maharaja Shiromani Sri Ratan
Singh Bahadur, Maharaja of Bikaner, by his third wife,
H.H. Maharani Baiji Sri Ajab Kumariji Sahib, educ.privately. Succeeded on the death of his father, 7th
August 1851. Ascended the gadi at the Karan Mahal,
Junagarh, Bikaner, 19th August 1851. Issued
orders banning sati and samadhi within his
territories in 1854. Assisted the British during the
Indian Mutiny in 1857, his troops serving at at Sirsa,
Hissar, Hansi, Hariana and Hazampur, at the siege of
Bathul and the attacks on Mangali and Tosham. The
maharaja and his sirdars served in person, during many of
these engagements. Removed the name of the Mughal emperor
from his coinage, replacing the words with Aurang Arya
Hind wa Queen Victoria. Granted a sanad of
adoption, 31st March 1862. Granted a valuable khilatsof honour, a kharita extolling his services
and forty-one villages in the Hissar district, 1st
May 1862. Reformed the judicial service, creating
separate civil, criminal and revenue courts to try

Adopted by the Batianji Maharani, senior widow of H.H.
Sri Raj Rajeshwar Maharajadhiraja Narendra Maharaja
Shiromani Sri Sardar Singh Bahadur, Maharaja of Bikaner.
Recognised by the GOI as successor to the throne of
Bikaner by a kharita dated 11th July
1872. Ascended the gadi at the Karan Mahal,
Junagarh, Bikaner, 13th July 1872 and invested
with limited ruling powers, 11th August 1872.
Invested with full ruling powers, 22nd January
1873. Attended the Imperial Durbar at Delhi, 1st
January 1877. Assisted the British during the Second
Afghan War by suppling 800 camels for the expedition in
1878. Greatly interested in education, he opened the
first public schools, and a college at Bikaner. He also
organised the first police force along modern lines,
introduced a budget and modern accounting methods, opened
dispensaries, appointed a civil surgeon, opened a post
office, reformed the jails and effected a revenue
settlement. Rcvd: Prince of Wales's gold medal
(26.1.1876) and KIH gold medal (1.1.1877). m. several

wife, H.H. Maharani Bai Sri Naniba Sahib, H.H. Shaktimant

Ranmalsinhji Sahib, Raj Sahib of Dhrangadhra, KCSI. m.
(second) a daughter of the Thakur of Satasar, in Bikaner
state. m. (third) 188x, H.H. Maharani Sri
Maharani Pugaliyaniji Sahiba (d. at Dalel
Niwas, 196x). He d.s.p. at Junagarh,
Bikaner, 19th August 1887 (succ. by his
brother and adopted son).
