1916 - 1917 H.H. Amir ‘Ali Haidar Pasha, Grand Sharif and Amir of Mecca. b. at Kanlijah, Bosphorus, 15th December 1866, eldest son of Sharif ‘Ali Jabir al-Devi Bey, by a Circassian lady, educ. Kanlijah Primary Sch, Bosphorus, Bayazid High Sch, and the Imperial Prince’s Sch, Yildiz Palace, Istanbul. Mbr Council of State 1890, Senator of the Empire of Turkey 1908-1916 & 1922-1923, Minister for Wakfs (Pious Foundations) 1911-1912. Appointed by the Sultan of Turkey as Amir of Mecca and 1st Vice-Presdt of the Senate, 18th June 1916. Never able to reach Mecca due to the Arab revolt, he resided at Medina 26th July 1916 – 21st March 1917, then went into voluntary exile in the Lebanon. Rcvd: The Exalted Order of Distinction (Nishan-i-Ali-Imtiaz) (1889), the Imperial Order of the Osmans (Nishan-i-Osmanieh) special class in brilliants (18.6.1916, 1st class 1912), and the Imtiyaz Medals in gold and silver of Turkey. m. (first) at Istanbul, 1884, Sabiha Khanum (d. 8th February 1961). m. (second) at Istanbul, April 1902, Fatma Khanum (b. 1874; d. at Alexandria, Egypt, 12th May 1952), née Isobel Dunn, Dir of the American Coll for Girls in Istanbul 1898-1902, daughter of Colonel Dunn Bey, a British officer in Turkish service. He d. at Le Phare, Ras Beirut, Lebanon, 24th March 1935, having had issue, four sons and three daughters:
- 1) H.H. Prince (Al-Amir Al-Sharif ) Damad Muhammad ‘Abdu’l-Majid Haidar Bey Effendi. b. at Kurucheshme, Beshiktash, Istanbul, Turkey, 1889 (s/o Sabiha), educ. Galatasaray Coll, and the Univ of Istanbul, Turkey. A gifted musician of the cello, violin and piano. Expelled from Turkey and deprived of Turkish nationality 1924, settled in Beirut 1926-1946, granted Jordanian nationality 1946. Jordanian Minister at the Court of St James’s 1946-1951 and to France 1951-1953, Ambassador to Turkey 1954-1960. Rcvd: the Order of the Two Rivers 1st class of Iraq, and the GC of the Orders of the Renaissance (special class), Independence of Jordan, Civil Merit of Spain (5.11.1949), etc. m. at Göztepe Palace, Turkey, 17th February 1910, H.I.H. Princess Rukiya Sultana (b. at the Ciragan Palace, Ortakoy, Beshiktash, Istanbul, 1st June 1885; d.s.p. at Istanbul, Turkey, 16th June 1971, bur. there), educ. privately, rcvd: the Nishan-i-Ali-Imtiaz, and the Nishan-i-Shafakat 1st class of Turkey, third daughter of Major-General H.I.H. Prince Muhammad Salah ud-din Effendi of Turkey, by his second wife, Davhida Zat-i-Gul Khanum Effendi. He d.s.p. at Istanbul, Turkey, 23rd November 1965.
- 2) Sharif Muhammad Muhi ud-din Bey [Muhiddin Haydar Targan]. b. at Kurucheshme, Beshiktash, Istanbul, Turkey, 21st January 1892 (s/o Sabiha), educ. English High Sch, and the Univ of Istanbul, Turkey, and at New York Univ, New York, USA (LLD, D Lit). Musician with Istanbul City Orchestra 1932-1936, Dir Baghdad Acad of Music 1936-1947, Dean of the Institute of Fine Arts 1940-1949, and Istanbul Konservatuari 1949-1951. A violin virtuoso and composer. m. at Istanbul, Turkey, 8th April 1950, Safiya Khanum [Safiye Ayla Targan] (b. at Istanbul, Turkey, 13th September 1907; d. there, 14th January 1998, bur. Zincirlikuyu Cemetery), educ. Women’s Teacher Training Coll, Bursa, the famous singer, sonwriter and bradcaster who made over 500 recordings in Turkish classical music, daughter of Hafiz ‘Abdu’llah Bey, a gentleman of Egyptian and Hijazi descent. He d. at Istanbul, Turkey, 13th September 1967 (bur. Zincirlikuyu Cemetery).
- 3) H.H. Prince (Al-Amir Al-Sharif ) Muhammad Amin Haidar Bey. b. at Istanbul, Turkey, 1895 (s/o Sabiha), educ. English High Sch, Istanbul, in Baghdad, Iraq, and Univ of St Andrews, Fife, Scotland. Professor of English at Dar al-Mu’allimin, Baghdad, Dir-Gen of Imports at Iraqi Ministry of Supply, Vice-Presdt Iraqi Govt Oil Refineries Admin 1957-1958. Hon Mbr Royal Central Asian Soc (1946).
- 4) Sharif Faisal Haidar Bey [Faysal Haydar Targan]. b. 1905 (s/o Sabiha), educ. English High Sch, Istanbul. Lived in Turkey and managed the family properties there. Adopted the family name of Targan. m. Farida Khanum. He d. at Istanbul, Turkey, 2nd June 1956 (bur. Zincirlikuyu Cemetery), having had issue, two daughters:
- a) Sharifa Nukhad [Nukhet]. m. James Howell. She had issue, including one son.
- b) Sharifa Najla [Necla]. m. (first) at Istanbul, Turkey, 11th December 1953, Ilhan Sarvan (d. at Istanbul, Turkey, 16th September 1978), son of Hilmi Sarvan, a leading merchant of Istanbul, by his wife, Semiha. m. (second) … Sarpel.
- 1) Sharifa Nimatu’llah Khanum [Nimet Refik Sadik] (d/o Sabiha). m. Refik Sadik.
- 2) Sharifa Sufeyma [Sfyneh] Khanum (d/o Fatma). m. ‘Abdu’r Razzak Hano Bey, an Egyptian subject.
- 3) Sharifa Musbah Khanum [H.R.H. Princess Musbah Haidar]. b. at Istanbul, Turkey, 25th November 1910 (d/o Fatma). Chair Anglo-Arab Assoc Ltd in 1955. Author of “Arabesque” (1944) and “Dawn Beyond the Tamarisks” (1953). m. as his second wife, Major Francis Daniel Steuart Fripp [Ghalib Bey] (b. at Dartford, Kent, 8th April 1898; d. at Kensington, 1966), cmsnd as Lieut IA 13/1/1918, transf Welsh Guards 12/1/1919, actg Capt 29/1/1920, prom Capt 1/1/1921, actg Maj 15/1/1922, Staff Capt India 1932-1936, prom Maj 1/1/1935, GSO 2 to the Inspector-Gen India 1936-1937, Inspector of Infantry and GSO 2 Training with BMM Iraq 1937, Hon Treasurer Anglo-Arab Assoc Ltd in 1955, former husband of Norah Francis Mary Selby, and elder son of Daniel Steuart Fripp, FCA, of Westbury-on-Trym, Gloucestershire, by his wife, Ethel Frances, daughter of Captain Alderton. She d.s.p.s. at Kensington, Middlesex, 13th January 1977 (bur. Brookwood Cemetery, Surrey), having had issue:
