1672 - 1727 H.M. Sultan 'Abul Nasir Mulay Ismail as-Samin bin Sharif, Sultan of Morocco, etc. b. at Sijilmasa (Rissani), Tafilalt, 1634, seventh son of Sultan Abul Amlak Sidi Muhammad as-Sharif bin 'Ali, Sultan of Sijilmasa, educ. privately. Kaid of Meknes, and Khalifa of Fez 1666-1672. Succeeded on the death of his elder half-brother, 9th April 1672. Proclaimed as Sultan of Morocco, etc. 14th April 1672. Established his capital at Meknes in 1675. Established a Negro slave army of numbering 150,000, which consolidated his power through much of present-day Morocco. Besieged the English at Tangier from 1678 and forced them to withdraw in 1684, and wrested Mamora, Mahdiya and Arsilah from the Portuguese. He conquered Larache from Spain in 1689, but failed to take Mazagan, Pemonde Velez or Ceuta from them. A cruel and despotic ruler, known as 'Safaq Adimaa' or 'The Bloodthirsty'. m. a large number of wives, including (first) Lalla Khnta (bur. at the Mausoleum of Mulay Ismail, Meknes). m. (second) Lalla Zaidana [Aisha Mbarka] (d. May 1715), styled Empress of Morocco by Europeans. m. (third) Tuma, his chief Queen (same as Zaidana?). m. (fourth) Lalla Umm al-Iz at-Taba [Umelez Ettaba] (d. after 1721), daughter of Lalla Halima. m. (fifth) Lalla Bilqis. m. (sixth) 1678, Lalla Hinata [Khunatha] (d. at Fez, 8th August 1742), daughter of Sidi Abu Bakar al-Gul bin 'Ali bin 'Abdu'llah, of the Awlad Abdalla clan. m. (seventh) Lalla Halima as-Sufianiya [Hazezas]. m. (eighth) a lady from the al-Taligiyya clan. m.(ninth) Lalla Alwa. m. (tenth) Mrs. Shaw, an Irishwoman. He d. at the Dar al-Kehira, Meknes, 21st March 1727 (bur. there at the Mausoleum of Mulay Ismail), having had issue, thirty-two sons (but credited with 700 sons in 1721 of whom the last is reported to have been born eighteen months after his death!):
