Hon. William (Stuart), 9th Lord Blantyre, educ. King Edward VI Grammar Sch., Norwich and HEIC Military Sch., Addiscombe, Surrey. Cmsnd. Ensign 2/6th BNI 11/5/1819, transf. 18th BNI 1824, prom. Lieut. 6th BNI 25/8/1821, Sub-Assist. Commissary-Gen. l /5/1822, raised a troop of irregular horse and commanded them in Assam during the First Burma War 1824-1825 (MID, India Medal, severely wounded and invalided home), struck off 13/12/1827, returned to India 1830, quitted the service to become a merchant Mariner in the China seas. Entered the service of the Sultan of Brunei 1838, by whom he was made Governor of Sarawak in reward for services rendered to him in suppressing rebellions in those territories, 24th September 1841. Succeeded in establishing his independent rule over the territory and was recognised as Rajah of Sarawak, by the Sultan of Brunei, 18th August 1842. An able and conscientious ruler, who introduced new laws, reformed the government and suppressed piracy and slavery. Served as HM's Cmsnr. and Consul-General for Borneo from 19th March 1847 and as Governor and Commander-in-Chief of Labuan from 27th November 1847 to November 1852. Presdt. Rajah Sir James Brooke, acknowledged a natural son, probably by a maid at his father's house in Bath:
1) Reuben George Brooke. b. 1834, educ. privately. Trooper RHG 1855. m. at Windermere, Westmorland, 10th July 1862, Elizabeth, daughter of … Mowbray, by his wife, Mary, of Preston, Lancs. He was lost at sea in the wreck of the SS British Admiral, during its voyage to Australia, 23rd May 1874, having had issue, six sons and one daughter:
a) James Brooke. b. at Kendal, Westmorland, 1863.
b) Reuben George Brooke. bapt. at Levens, Westmorland, 5th June 1864.
c) Ruby James Brooke. b. at Daybrooke, Nottingham, 1866.
d) Stewart Brooke. b. June 1868. He d. at Daybrooke, Nottingham, 12th October 1870 (bur. Plumtree Churchyard, Nottingham).
* Some Brunei sources indicate that Rajah Sir James Brooke m. according to Muslim rites, Pengiran Anak Fatima, daughter of Pengiran Anak Abdul Kadir, and granddaughter of H.H. Paduka Sri Sultan Muhammad Khanz ul-'Alam ibni al-Marhum Paduka Sri Sultan 'Omar 'Ali Saif ud-din, Sultan of Brunei. She is also said to have had a daughter by him, who was alive in 1864 and interviewed by the then British Consul. This marriage is given as a plausible reason for the ease by which the session of Sarawak was accomplished.
