1917 - 1946 H.H. Rajah Sir Charles Vyner de Windt Brooke, Rajah of Sarawak, GCMG (3.6.1927). b. at Albermarle St., London, 26th September 1874, educ. Clevedon, Winchester, and Magdalene Coll, Cambridge. Declared Heir Apparent with the title of Rajah Muda, 31st July 1891. Invested at Kuching, 12th May 1904. ADC to his father 1897-1898, DO Simanggang 1898-1901, Resident of Muka and Oya, 1902-1903, Resident of the Third Division 1903-1904, Presdt Law Courts 1904-1911, Vice-Presdt Supreme and General Councils 1904-1911, cmsnd. as 2nd Lieut 3rd County of London (Sharpshooters) Yeomanry 12/5/1911, resigned 21/5/1913, Administrator of Dayaks 1916, served in the Great War incognito as a private in Anti-Aircraft Defence and as a fitter in the Airoplane Manufacturing Works at Shoreditch. Granted the personal style of His Highness by command of King George V, 22nd June 1911. Succeeded on the death of his father, 17th May 1917. Proclaimed at Kuching, 24th May 1917, and took the Oath before the Council Negri 22nd July 1918. Introduced the Sarawak Penal Code, based on the Indian Code 1924. Proclaimed Constitution Founded 24th September 1941. Founder and first Sovereign of The Most Illustrious Order of the Star of Sarawak, 26th September 1928. Colonel The Sarawak Rangers 1917-1932. Japanese forces occupied Sarawak from 25th December 1941 to 11th September 1945, when Australian troops liberated Kuching. The Rajah's civilian rule being restored on his return to Kuching, 14th April 1946. Formally ceded Sarawak to the British Crown accepting a large pension together with the continuance of his styles and titles for his lifetime, 1st July 1946. m. at St Peter's Church, Cranborne, Windsor Forest, 21st February 1911, H.H. Sylvia Leonora, the Ranee of Sarawak (b. at No. 1, Tilney Street, Park Lane, London, 25th February 1885; d. at Tuffett Cottage, Sandy Lane, St James, Barbados, 11th November 1971), granted the title of Ranee Muda 21st February 1911, the style of Her Highness 22nd June 1911, and invested with the title of Ranee of Sarawak 24th May 1917, Grand Master of The Most Illustrious Order of the Star of Sarawak (1.9.1941), author of "Queen of the Head-Hunters" (1970), second daughter of Colonel The Rt. Hon. Reginald Baliol (Brett), 2nd Viscount Esher, PC, GCB, GCVO, KJStJ, sometime Governor and Constable of Windsor Castle, and Keeper of the King's Archives, by his wife The Rt. Hon. Eleanor Frances Weston, Viscountess Esher, RRC, DJStJ, third daughter of Professor H.E. Jean Sylvain Van der Weyer, KCH, sometime Prime Minister of Belgium and Envoi Extr & Minister Plen at the Court of St James's. He d. at No. 13, Albion Street, Bayswater, London W2, 9th May 1963 (bur. Sheepstor Churchyard, Devon), having had issue, three daughters:
