1913 - 1937 Major H.H.
Raja Shrimant Sir Khem Sawant V Bhonsle Bahadur [Bapu
Sahib], Sir Desai of Sawantwadi, KCSI (4.6.1934). b.
at Sawantwadi, 20th August 1897, only son of
H.H. Raja Shrimant Shriram Sawant Bhonsle Bahadur, Sir
Desai of Sawantwadi, by his first wife, H.H. Shrimant
Akhand Soubhagyavati Rani Jankibai Raje Bhonsle, educ.
Malvern Coll., Worcestershire, Trinity Coll., Cambridge,
and Officers' Cadet Training Sch., Cambridge. Succeeded
on the death of his father, 24th April 1913.
Cmsnd. as temp. Hon. 2nd Lieut. 24/6/1917,
attached 1st Btn, 116th Mahratta
Light Infantry IA, served in the Great War in Mesopotamia
and Palestine 1917-1919, prom. Hon Capt. 23/7/1919, and
Hon Maj 23/8/1933. Granted a permanent salute of 11-guns
in recognition of war services, 1/1/1921. Reigned under
the Regency of his stepmother until he came of age, and
was invested with full ruling powers, at Sawantwadi, 29th
October 1924. Attended the funeral of the King Emperor
George V in London in 1936. Mbr. Willingdon (Bombay), and
Belgaum Clubs. Rcvd: British War, Allied Victory
(1918), Silver Jubilee (1935) and Coron. (1937) medals. m.

Bhonsle [H.H. Rajmatoshri Parvatidevi Bhonsle] (b.
at Baroda, 1st May 1907; d. at Belgaum,
1961), Rani Regent from 4th July 1937 to 2nd
May 1947, rcvd: Silver Jubilee (1935), Coron.
(1937) and Indian Independence (1948) medals, née
Shrimant Yuvarajkumari Lakshmi Devi Raje Gaekwad, younger
daughter of Lieutenant-Colonel Shrimant Yuvaraj
Fatehsinhrao Gaekwad, of Baroda, by his wife, Shrimant
Akhand Soubhagyavati Yuvarajni Padmavati Devi Raje
Gaekwad, daughter of Shrimant Ramchandrarao Jagdeorao
Naik Nimbalkar, of Phaltan. He d. at Wanawadi
Military Hospital, Poona, 4th July 1937,
having had issue, one son and three daughters:

H.H. Raja Shrimant Sir Khem Sawant V Bhonsle Bahadur
[Bapu Sahib], Sir Desai of Sawantwadi, KCSI, by his wife,
H.H. Shrimant Akhand Soubhagyavati Rani Parvatibai Raje
Bhonsle, Rani Regent of Sawantwadi, educ. the Doon
Sch., Dehra Dun, Wadia Coll., Poona, and OTC, Mhow.
Succeeded on the death of his father, 4th July
1937. Ascended the gadi, at Sawantwadi, 5th
July 1937. Reigned under the Regency of his mother until
he came of age. Invested with full ruling powers, 12th
May 1947. Cmsnd. 2nd-Lieut. Baroda State
Forces, served in WW2 1944-1946, prom. Capt. IA 3/7/1944,
coy. cdr. 10th (Training) Btn., Mahratta Light
Infantry IA 1944-1945, QM 1945-1946, prom. Hon.
Lieut-Col. IA. Signed the instrument of accession to the
Dominion of India, 15th August 1947. Merged
his state into the Bombay Presidency, 8th
March 1948 (when he ceased to enjoy sovereign powers).
MLA for Sawantwadi in the Bombay state assembly 1967-1971
and in the Maharashtra state assembly 1980-1990. The GOI
amended the Indian Constitution to remove his position as
a "ruler" and his right to receive privy-purse
payments, 28th December 1971. A keen
sportsman, musician and artist. Rcvd: 39/45 star,
British War, Defense, India Service (1945), and Indian
Independence (1948) medals. m. at Bombay, 8th

Satvashiladevi Raje Bhonsle [H.H. Rajmatoshri
Satvashiladevi Bhonsle] (b. at Pratap Vilas
Palace, Baroda, 1935), educ. privately, Presdt.
Sawantwadi Lacquerwares, Sawantwadi Woodworks and Shri
Patekar Industries, second daughter of Major-General H.H.
Shrimant Maharaja Sir Pratapsinhrao Gaekwad, Khas Khel
Shamsher Bahadur, Maharaja of Baroda, GCIE, by his first
wife H.H. Maharani Shrimant Akhand Soubhagyavati Shanta
Devi Sahiba, daughter of Meherban Shrimant Sardar
Mansinhrao Ghorpade [Appa Sahib], of Hasur, in Kolhapur
state. He d. at Belgaum, 13th July
