1838 - 1845 H.H. Shri Durbar Maharajadhiraja Maharaj Rana Shri Madan Singh, Maharaj Rana of Jhalawar. b. at Kotah, 1808, son of Raj Rana Shri Madho Singh Bahadur, Musahib-i-Ala of Kotah, educ. privately. Entered the Kotah service under his father, and succeeded him in the post of Musahib-i-Ala of Kotah in 1834. Received Jhalawar when his lands and estates were erected into a separate state after partition from Kotah, in an attempt to conclude long running differences with the Maharaja, 8th April 1838. Granted the hereditary style and title of Maharaj Rana together with a hereditary salute of 15-guns, and recognised as an independent ruler by the HEIC. Installed at Jhalarapatam, 1st August 1838. m. (first) 1822, H.H. Chandrawatji Rani Suraj Kumari Sahiba (d.s.p.), daughter of the Diwan of Rampura, in Indore state. m. (second) Rani Manji Jaisalmerji Sahiba, a lady from the Bhati family of Jaisalmer. m. (third) 1841, a sister of Thakur Sultan Singh, of Amritkheri, of the Bhati family of Goraich, in Mewar. m. (fourth) 1843, H.H. Rathoriji Rani Fateh Kunwar Sahiba (d. by sati at Jhalrapatam, 1845), daughter of Thakur Shri Jodh Singhji Rathore, Thakur of Badnore, under Udaipur Mewar. m. (fifth) a lady from the Kachhawa family of Bamori, in Jhalawar. He d. at Jhalrapatam, 1845, having had issue, one son and one daughter: Maharaj Rana Shri Madan Singh, also had further issue by a secondary wife:

1845 - 1875 H.H. Shri Durbar Maharajadhiraja Maharaj Rana Shri Prithviraj Singhji, Maharaj Rana of Jhalawar. b. at Kotah, 1830, only son of H.H. Maharaj Rana Shri Madan Singh, Maharaj Rana of Jhalawar, by his second wife, Rani Manji Jaisalmerji Sahiba, educ. privately. Succeeded on the death of his father, 1845. Installed at Jhalrapatam, July 1847. Granted a sanad of adoption, 11th March 1862. m. (first) H.H. Nathawatiji Rani Jadao Kunwari Sahiba, daughter of Thakuran Raj Shri Lakshman Singhji, Thakur of Chomu, sometime Diwan and Fauj Musahib of Jaipur. m. (second) H.H. Bhatianiji Rani Sahiba (d.at Fort Jhalawar, 1890), daughter of the Thakur of Goraich, in Mewar. m. (third) at Lunawarda, 1874, H.H. Solankhya Rani Sahiba (d.s.p.m. at Fort Jhalawar, 1883), daughter of H.H. Maharana Shri Dalelsinhji Sahib, Maharana of Lunawarda. He d.s.p.m. at Fort Jhalawar, 29th August 1875*, having had issue, an only legitimate daughter by his first or second wife:
Maharaj Rana Shri Prithviraj Singh also adopted the son of Thakur Shri Kesharsinhji Rajsinhji Jhala, as his son and successor in 1873, with rights of succession after those of any legitimate sons he may subsequently sire:

* At the death of Maharaj Rana Shri Prithvi Singh in 1875, his third and youngest wife claimed to be pregnant with his child. The terms of the adoption of Zalim Singh having stipulated that he would be superseded if the Rana produced a legitimate son, the British authorities held the succession in abeyance until the birth of the child and the determination of its sex. 1875 - 1896 H.H. Maharaj Rana Shri Zalim Singh II, Maharaj Rana of Jhalawar. b. at Wadhwan, 5th November 1864, as Kumar Shri Vakhatsinghji Kesharsinhji Jhala, son of Thakur Shri Kesharsinhji Rajsinhji Jhala, of Wadhwan, by a princess of Morvi, educ. Mayo Coll, Ajmer. Adopted by Maharaj Rana Shri Prithvi Singh, 1873.  At the death of Maharaj Rana Shri Prithvi Singh on 29th August 1875, his third and youngest wife claimed to be pregnant with his child. The terms of the adoption of Zalim Singh having stipulated that he would be superseded if the Rana produced a legitimate son, the British authorities held the succession in abeyance until the birth of the child and the determination of its sex. No signs of pregnancy emerged and no child having been born after nine months, Zalim Singh was confirmed as Maharaj Rana, 1st June 1876 (with effect from 29th August 1875). Installed on the gadi with the reign name of Zalim Singh II, 24th June 1876. Reigned under a Council of Regency until he came of age and was invested with limited ruling powers, 21st February 1884. The state administration having fallen into confusion, the British authorities suspended his ruling powers in  September 1887 and placed the administration in the sole charge of the Diwan under British supervision. The Maharaj Rana's powers were partially restored to him in November 1892, and subsequently fully restored in July 1894. However, the state administration deteriorated again within a year of his resumption of control and, after an investigation by the British authorities, he was finally deposed on the grounds of mal-administration and mental incapacity, 22nd March 1896. Granted a political pension of £2,000 p.a. and instructed to reside outside the state for the rest of his days. Settled in Benares. Rcvd: KIH Gold Medal (1877). m. (first) at Kishengarh, 1886, H.H. Rathoriji Rani Sahiba (b. at Kishangarh, 1879; d. at Fort Jhalawar, 21st December 1918), fourth daughter of H.H. Umdai Rajahae Buland Makan Maharajadhiraj Maharaja Prithvi Singh Sahib Bahadur, Raja of Kishengarh. m. (second) at Limbdi, 1886, H.H. Gohilji Rani Sahiba (d. at Jhalrapatan, 28th August 1900), from the Gohil family of Limbda, bhayads of Lathi. He d.s.p. at Benares, ca 24th September 1912 (cremated there).
