1907 - 1926 H.H. Maharaja Sri Sri Sri Sri Sri Sir Ugyen Wangchuk [O-rgyan dBang-phyung], Maharaja of Bhutan, GCIE (1.1.1921, KCIE 2.1.1905), KCSI (12.12.1911). b. at Byagar, 1862, only surviving son of H.H. Dasho Samdrup Jigme Namgyal, 10th Trongsa Penlop and 51st Druk Desi (Deb Raja) of Bhutan, by his wife, Ashi Pema Chokyi, daughter of Dasho Ugyen Puntso Tamshing, Choji of Bumthang, educ. privately. Installed as the 23rd Paro Penlop 1879, and as the 12th Trongsa Penlop at the Zimchung Nang of the Trongsa Choekor Rabtentse Dzong 1882. Gongzim 1886-1907. Unanimously elected by the clergy, the State Councillors, the chillahs of all the districts, and the representatives of the people as the first hereditary ruler of Bhutan, 17th December 1907. Crowned on the same day at the Pungtang Dechen Phodrang Dzong, Punakha. Granted a salute of 15-guns, 27th December 1903 (made permanent, 3rd June 1911). Rcvd: Delhi Durbar Gold Medal (12.12.1911). m. (first) 1882 (div. 1886), Ashi Ludrong Dolma [Dechen Zangmo] (d. 1900), daughter of Kalon Ashang Wangya. m. (second) 1885, his first cousin, Ashi Rinchen Pelmo (d. at Bumthang, 1902), daughter of his maternal uncle, Dasho Pema Tenzin, Byagar Dzongpon, sometime Trongsa Penlop, by his wife, Ashi Lemo, daughter of Kunzang Thrinley, of Kurtoe Khoma Chukm, sometime Thimphu zongpon. m. (third) Ashi Ngodrup Pemo. m. (fourth) at at Wangduchholing Palace, Bumthang, 1902, H.H. Maharani Tsundue Pema Lhamo (b. at Kurto Khoma, ca. 1884; d. at Wangduchholing Palace, Bumthang, April 1922), nee Ashi Lemo, daughter of his first cousin, Dasho Kunzang Trinley, sometime Thimphu Dzongpon and Wangdu Phodrang Dzongpon, by his wife, a noble lady from Kurto Khoma. He d. at Wangduchholing Palace, Bumthang, 26th August 1926, having had issue, seven sons and three daughters:

1926 - 1952 H.H. Maharaja Sri Sri Sri Sri Sri Sir Jigme Wangchuk [Jigs-med dBang-phyug], Maharaja of Bhutan, KCIE (3.6.1930, CIE 11.3.1927). b. 1905, fifth and eldest surviving son of H.H. Maharaja Sri Sri Sri Sri Sri Sir Ugyen Wangchuk, Maharaja of Bhutan, GCIE, KCSI, by his fourth wife, Ashi Tsundue Lhamo Kurto Khoma Chukmo, educ. Bumthang Palace Sch and Trongsa Sch. Appointed as Trongsa Dronyer 1918, and installed as 14th Trongsa Penlop at the Zimchung Nang of the Trongsa Choekor Rabtentse Dzong, 1923. Succeeded on the death of his father, 26th August 1926. Crowned at the Pungtang Dechen Phodrang Dzong, Punakha, 14th March 1927. He introduced several important reforms, including a restructuring of the tax system, restricted the powers of the dzonpons and penlops, abolished redundant sinecures and established a cabinet (Nangi Lhengye Zhi) to help conduct the administration. Concluded the Treaty of Punakha wih India 8th August 1949, by which Bhutan's external affairs were to be guided by that country. Dasho Samdrup Jigme Namgyal, 10th Trongsa Penlop and 51st Druk Desi (Deb Raja) of Bhutan. m. (second) 1932, H.M. 1952 - 1972 H.M. Druk Gyalpo Jigme Dorji Wangchuk [Jigs-med rDo-rje dBang-phyug], Mang-pos Bhur-ba'i rgyalpo, King of Bhutan. b. at Thupang Palace, Tongsa, 2nd May 1929, eldest son of H.H. Maharaja Sri Sri Sri Sri Sri Sir Jigme Wangchuk, Maharaja of Bhutan, KCIE, by his first wife, H.M. Queen Mother Puntsho Choden, educ. Royal Palace Sch, Bumthang, and privately at Kalimpong, India, and England. Appointed as Trongsa Dronyer 1945. Appointed as Heir Apparent by his father 1946 and formally installed as 25th Paro Penlop 1950. Succeeded on the death of his father, 30th March 1952. Crowned by Je Samten Jamtsho, at the Pungtang Dechen Phodrang Dzong, Punakha, 27th October 1952. He established the first unicameral National Assembly (Tshogdu) in 1953, launched a five-year economic development plan in 1961, established the Royal Advisory Council (Lodoe Tshogde) in 1963, and appointed a Council of Ministers in 1968. He also reorganised the judiciary, abolished serfdom and outlawed slavery. Following the promulgation of a new constitution in 1963, he altered his style and title from Maharaja and His Highness to His Majesty the Druk Gyalpo and assumed the position of Commander-in-Chief. Thimphu was formally made the year-long national capital in 1966. He also succeeded in establishing formal diplomatic relations with the wider world for the first time, including membership of the United Nations on 21st September 1971.
