  • 1827, 1851-1856 and 1880-1881 H.H. Amir ‘Abdu’l-Mutalib Pasha Al-Ghalib, Grand Sharif and Amir of Mecca. b. 1790, son of H.H. Sharif Muhammad Ghalib bin Musa’ad bin Said bin Sa’ad Al-Zeid, Grand Sharif of Mecca. Appointed by the Sultan of Turkey to succeed his cousin, August 1827. Deposed in September 1827 but re-appointed in July 1851. Deposed again for the second time on 6th January 1856, for opposing the Sultan’s reforms, including the abolition of slavery. Re-appointed June 1880. Deposed again by Osman Pasha for allegedly keeping-up a secret correspondence with the British, 31st August 1881. Imprisoned in the Castle of Taif then confined under house arrest at Mecca for the rest of his days. Rcvd: the Imperial Order of the Osmans (Nishan-i-Osmanieh) special class in brilliants of Turkey (x.3.1880). m. (first) a daughter of Dahilu’llah Bey. m. (second) a daughter of Sharif Muhsin. Governor of Mecca under his uncle in 1917. He later entered the service of Ibn Saud and was appointed Amir al-Arban (Dir of Tribes), Presdt Inspectorate of Government Departments in 1930 and served until that office was abolished in the 1940s. Author of "Al-Rihlat al-Yamaniyyah" or "ar-Rihla al-yamaniya" (1912).

  • 1881-1882 and 1908 H.H. Amir ‘Abdu’l-Ilah Pasha, Grand Sharif and Amir of Mecca. b. 1845, youngest son of H.H. Amir Muhammad bin ‘Abdu’l Muin al-‘Aun, Grand Sharif and Amir of Mecca. Assumed the amirate with the help of Osman Pasha, after he had deposed ‘Abdu’l-Mutalib, 31st August 1881. His appointment was not confirmed by the Sultan, who proclaimed his brother instead and had him imprisoned in the Castle of Taif, 30th August 1882. Compelled to return to Istanbul, where he was compensated with membership of the State Council and the rank of Vizier. Proclaimed as Amir and Grand Sharif by the Sultan, at Istanbul, 26th October 1908 but died before proceeding to the Holy cities. Rcvd: the Imperial Orders of the Osmans (Nishan-i-Osmanieh) 1st class and Nobility (Nishan-i-Majidieh) 1st class, Liyakat Medals in gold and silver, Hijaz Medal in gold of Turkey, the Order of the Lion & Sun 1st class of Persia, etc. m. Mbr Council of State 1890, Senator of the Empire of Turkey 1908-1916 & 1922-1923, Minister for Wakfs (Pious Foundations) 1911-1912. Appointed by the Sultan of Turkey as Amir of Mecca and 1st Vice-Presdt of the Senate, 18th June 1916. Never able to reach Mecca due to the Arab revolt, he resided at Medina 26th July 1916 – 21st March 1917, then went into voluntary exile in the
    Lebanon. Musician with Istanbul City Orchestra 1932-1936, Dir Baghdad Acad of Music 1936-1947, Dean of the Institute of Fine Arts 1940-1949, and Istanbul Konservatuari 1949-1951. A violin virtuoso and composer. m. at Istanbul, Turkey, 8th April 1950, Safiya Khanum [Safiye Ayla Targan] (b. at Istanbul, Turkey, 13th September 1907; d. there, 14th January 1998, bur. Zincirlikuyu Cemetery), educ. Women’s Teacher Training Coll, Bursa, the famous singer, sonwriter and bradcaster who made over 500 recordings in Turkish classical music, daughter of Hafiz ‘Abdu’llah Bey, a gentleman of Egyptian and Hijazi descent.
