GENEALOGY

Tapu'osi, of Vasivasi, Fiji. m. Princess Sinaitakala-'i-Langileka, 3rd Tu'i Tonga Fefine, daughter of 'Uluakimata I Tele'a, 30th Tu'i Tonga, by his wife, Princess 'Ekutingapipiki, 4th Tu'i Tonga Fefine, daughter of Fatafehi [Fatefehi-i-Langi Paepae-'o-Tele'a], 30th Tu'i Tonga. He had issue:
 
fl. 1616 Latumailangi Puakatefisi, 1st Latu, of Niu'atuputapu, youngest son of Fonomanu, son of Tapu'osi, of Vasivasi, Fiji, by his wife, Princess Sinaitakala-'i-Langileka, 3rd Tu'i Tonga Fefine. Became ruler of the Island of Niu'atuputapu sometime during the latter part of the sixteenth century. Received the Dutch merchants Jan Schouten and Jacob Lemaire, at Niuatoputapu 12th May 1616. He d. after 1616, having had issue, two sons:
 
Pungakaitafola, 2nd Latu, of Niu'atuputapu, eldest son of Latumailangi Puakatefisi, 1st Latu, of Niu'atuputapu. Succeeded on the death of his father. Abdicated in favour of his younger brother, due to illness. m. (morganatic) Fakaositahole, a Tongan woman. He had issue, a son (excluded from the succession):
 
Pu'akailakelo, 3rd Ma'atu, of Niu'atuputapu, younger son of Latumailangi Puakatefisi, 1st Latu, of Niu'atuputapu. Succeeded on the abdication of his elder brother. Altered his title from Latu to Ma'atu. m. Si'ulolovao, daughter of Valamotu, daughter of Fusita, by his wife, a daughter of Alofi, Fotofili, Governor of Niu'afo'ou. He had issue, one son:
 
Ikamafana I, 4th Ma'atu, of Niu'atuputapu, son of Pu'akailakelo, 3rd Ma'atu, of Niu'atuputapu, by his wife, Si'ulolovao. Succeeded on the death of his father.

17xx - 18xx Ikamafana II, 5th Ma'atu, of Niu'atuputapu, son of (?)Ikamafana I, 4th Ma'atu, of Niu'atuputapu. m.  Latutama, younger daughter of H.H. Maeli'uaki Fatu, 15th Tu'i Ha'atakalaua and 8th Tu'i Konokupolo, by his second wife, Langilangiha'aluma. He was k. on 'Uvea, having had issue, one son and one daughter:
 
18xx - 18xx Ngongo, 6th Ma'atu, of Niu'atuputapu, son of Ikamafana II, 5th Ma'atu, of Niu'atuputapu, by his wife, Latutama. Adopted by the ruler of Uvea after the death of his father. Succeeded on the death of his father. Converted to Christianity. m. Tonga Ha'apai, daughter of Sisitoutai, of the Tokemoana line. He had issue, two sons:
 
18xx - 1862 The Hon. Uiliame Latumailangi, 7th Ma'atu of Niu'atuputapu. Succeeded on the death of his father. Ceded the island of Niu'atuputapu, to King George Tupou I on 4th June 1862, when Niu'atuputapu became an integral part of the kingdom. Governor of Niu'atuputapu 1862-1877. Appointed as a hereditary noble of the Kingdom of Tonga, 1875. He d. at Niu'atuputapu, 1877 (bur. there).
