1863 – 1914 H.H. Paduka Sri Baginda Al-Sultan Besar Sir Ahmad Mua’azzam Shah ibni al-Marhum Bendahara Sri Maharaja Tun Ali, Sultan and Yang di-Pertuan of the State of Pahang, KCMG (9.11.1902). b. at Pulau Maulana, Pekan, 22nd April 1836, third son of H.H. Sri Paduka Tun Muhammad Tahir bin Dato’ Bendahara Sri Maharaja Tun Ali, Dato’ Bendahara Sri Maharaja of Pahang, by his second wife, Che’ Long [Che’ Puan Lingga], educ. privately. Granted Kuantan and Endau as his fief by his father, but opposed in his control of these territories by his brother, after his succession in 1857. The dispute over these territories prompted him to oppose his brother in the supreme government and he assumed the title of Sri Paduka Dato’ Bendahara Sri Wak Raja together with the style of Duli Yang Mulia, 1858. Conquered and established control over a number of important towns and regions in the interior, before eventually seizing the capital at Kuala Pahang and expelling his nephew and his guardin, and assuming the title of Sri Paduka Dato’ Bendahara Sri Maharaja, 10th June 1863. Proclaimed by the chiefs and people of Pahang as their Sultan, 8th September 1881. Installed at Pekan with the title of Ke-bawah Duli Yang Maha Mulia Paduka Sri Baginda Sultan Ahmad Mua’azzam Shah, 25th December 1884 (recognised by the British authorities 1887). Entered into a Treaty of Federation to form the Federated Malay States, July 1895. Transferred his executive and administrative powers to his eldest son, due to old age, 3rd April 1909 (retaining his position and titles as Head of State for life). Rcvd: GC of the Order of King Kalakaua I of Hawaii (26.11.1881). m. (first) Cik Besar Yang Atur binti ‘Abdu’llah, daughter of Lim Ah Sam, Kapitan China of Pulau Belitung. m. (second) Cik Amah binti Jamut [Lamah], from Ganchong. m. (third) Engku Besar Trengganu, daughter of Y.M. Sayyid Muhammad Zain Al-Idrus, Engku Pengiran Anum, of Trengganu. m. (fourth) 1863, H.H. Tun Besar Fatima binti Tun Muhammad, Tengku Ampuan Tua (d. at Kuala Pahang, 22nd March 1929, bur. there at the Royal Cemetery), granted the title of Encik Puan Bongsu with the style of Duli Yang Mulia 1863, prom to Tengku Ampuan with the style of Duli Yang Maha Mulia (Her Highness) 25th December 1884, and Tengku Ampuan Tua 1914, daughter of his paternal uncle, Y.M. Tun Muhammad bin Bendahara Paduka Raja Tun Koris, of Tanjung. m. (fifth) Che’ Ungku Pah binti Dato’ Temenggong Sri Maharaja Tun Ibrahim (d. at the Istana Pantai, Pekan Lama, Pahang, before 24th September 1906, bur. there at the Royal Cemetery, Kuala Pahang), daughter of H.H. Sri Paduka Datu Temenggong Sri Maharaja Tun Ibrahim bin Datu Temenggong Sri Maharaja Daing ‘Abdu’l Rahman, Maharaja of Johor. m. (sixth) Y.M. Encik Zubaida binti ‘Abdu’llah [Che’ Bidah], Encik Besar (d. at Kuala Trengganu, 3rd June 1937, bur. there at the Masjid Puteh Cemetery), nee Tan Lai Kim, a Chinese lady who converted to Islam, granted the title of Encik Besar 1863. m. (seventh) Cik Hajjah Fatima binti Haji Muhammad Talib (d. 22nd December 1975), daughter of Haji Muhammad Talib, of Semantan. m. (a) Cik Kusuma [Sokma] binti Tok Minal Daeng Koro, daughter of Tok Minal Daeng Koro bin Daeng Merak, by his wife, Tok Yah. m. (b) Cik Santoma, a sister or first cousin of Encik Besar. m. (c) Cik Wan Mandak Kiri. m. (d) Cik Halima, from Jambu Rias. m. (e) Cik Bakai. m. (f) Cik Mah, daughter of Awang Tukang, from Sebarang Jauh, Pekan. m. (g) Cik Maimuna. m. (h) Cik Fatima Selat, from Singapore. He d. at the Istana Pantai, Pekan Lama, Pahang, 29th May 1914 (bur. there at the Royal Cemetery, Kuala Pahang), having had issue, seven sons and five daughters:
