1959 - 1981 Colonel H.R.H. Paduka Sri Sultan Sir Ismail al-Khalidi ibni al-Marhum Sultan Sir Ibrahim, By the grace of God Sultan and Yang di-Pertuan of the State and Territory of Johor, KBE (c 11.5.1937), CMG (1.1.1926). b. at Istana Semayun, Johor Bahru, 28th October 1894, second and eldest surviving son of Major-General H.R.H. Paduka Sri Sultan Al-Haj Sir Ibrahim al-Mashur ibni al-Marhum Sultan Sir Abu Bakar, Sultan and Yang di-Pertuan of the State and Territory of Johor, GCMG, GBE, by his first wife, H.H. Sultana Maimuna, educ. Rose Hill Sch, Tunbridge Wells, Kent, Aldeburgh Lodge, Suffolk, Roydon Hall, Norfolk and Malay Coll, Kuala Kangsar. Appointed Heir Apparent and invested with the title of Tunku Mahkota at the Istana Besar, Johor Bahru, 2nd November 1895. Succeeded on the death of his father, 8th May 1959. Proclaimed and installed at the Istana Besar, Johor Bahru, 6th June 1959 and crowned at the Istana Besar, Johor Bahru, 27th February 1960. Founded the Darjah Setia Sultan Ismail Johor Yang Amat di-Berkati (the Most Blessed Order of Loyalty to Sultan Ismail of Johor) in three classes 28th October 1974. Joined Johor Civil Service 1956-1959 and served in various district offices, land office, state secretariat, forest office and treasury. Appointed as Heir Apparent and formally invested with the title of Tunku Mahkota at Johor Bahru, 8th May 1959. Deprived of his title and excluded from the succession by his father, 10th August 1961. Granted the title of Raja Muda, 1st December 1966 and re-instated as Heir Apparent and Tunku Mahkota, 29th April 1981. Succeeded on the death of his father, 10th May 1981. Proclaimed and installed, at the Istana Besar, Johor Bahru, 11th May 1981. Became King of Malaysia with the title of Yang di-Pertuan Agung and style of Majesty, 26th April 1984. Installed at Kuala Lumpur, 15th November 1984. Completed his reign and returned to Johor, 25th April 1989.
