1883 - [1930] H.H. Paduka Sri Nasr ul-Zaman al-Sultan ‘Abdu’l-Rahman Mu’azzam Shah ibni al-Marhum al-Malik al-Hadi Raja Muhammad Yusuf al-Mahdi, Sultan and Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Lingga, Riau and dependencies. b. at Penyengat, 1851, as Raja ‘Abdu’l-Rahman, son of H.H. Paduka Sri Raja Muhammad Yusuf al-Mahdi ibni al-Marhum Sultan ‘Ali ‘Ala ud-din Ri’ayat Shah, Yang di-Pertuan Muda of Riau, by his principal wife, H.H. Tengku Embong Fatima binti al-Marhum Sultan Mahmud Muzaffar Shah, Tengku Ampuan, only daughter of H.H. Paduka Sri Sultan Mahmud IV Muzaffar Shah ibni al-Marhum Sultan Muhammad Mu’azzam Shah, Sultan and Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Lingga, Riau and dependencies, educ. privately. Selected by the Dutch authorities as successor following the death of his maternal great grand uncle, in preference to more eligible senior princes of the Malay Royal Family, 13th October 1883. Reigned under the Regency of his mother, until he came of age and was installed with full ruling powers, at Daik, 18th February 1885. Assumed the office of Yang di-Pertuan Muda, merging it with the crown after the death of his father, 17th July 1899. Removed his capital from Daik to Penyengat. Fled to Singapore in an attempt to avoid signing a restrictive contract with the Dutch colonial authorities. Deposed in absentia, 3rd February 1911. The sultanate was ruled by colonial administrators until abolished, the state and territories then being placed under the direct rule of the colonial government, 9th January 1913. Rcvd: Knt 3rd class of the Order of the Netherlands Lion (31.8.1906). m. (first) ca. 1884, Encik Dayang, a lady of Bugis descent from Daik. m. (second) Encik Nur, a Malay lady from Daik. m. (third) Y.M. Sharifa Aisha, daughter of Tuan Bilik, a Sayyid from Indragiri, Sumatra. m. (fourth) H.H. Tengku Jahara binti Tengku Embong Usman, Tengku Ampuan Besar (d. at Singapore, ca. 1936, bur. there at Makam Wakaf), daughter of Y.A.M. Tengku Embong Usman ibni al-Marhum Sultan Muhammad Mu’azzam Shah, of Daik, by his wife, Encik Nurijah. m. (fifth) Encik Ain un-nisa [Ainon] binti ‘Abdu’llah, an Indo-Dutch convert to Islam. m. (sixth) ... m. (seventh) Encik Amina [Mina] binti ‘Abdu’llah, a lady from Riau. He d. at Teluk Belanga, Singapore, 28th December 1930 (bur. there at Keramat Bukit Kasita), having had issue, five sons and three daughters:
