1878 - 1918 H.H. Zubdat ul-Mulk, Diwan Mahakhan Nawab Sir Sher Muhammad Khan Bahadur, Nawab of Palanpur, GCIE (1.1.1898, KCIE 2.1.1893). b. at Palanpur, 1852, only surviving son of H.E. Zubdat ul-Mulk, Diwan Mahakhan Nawab Zorawar Muhammad Khan Bahadur, Diwan of Palanpur, educ. privately. Succeeded on the death of his father, 28th August 1878. Ascended the musnaid on the same day. Formally installed at the Zorawar Palace, Palanpur, 19th September 1878. Assisted the British during the Second Afghan War in 1879. Raised to the hereditary title of Nawab together with the style of His Highness, and granted an enhanced personal salute of 13-guns, 1910. Attended the Coronation Durbars of King-Emperor Edward VII at Delhi in 1903 and King-Emperor George V at Delhi in 1911. An enlightened and conscientious ruler, he established a police force, schools for both boys and girls, introduced free primary education, built hospitals, founded travelling dispensaries and a library. He did much to improve agriculture by abolishing the traditional system of labour known as veith (similar to corvée), sinking water wells, improving irrigation and farm yields, and populating 68 new villages within the state. Road and rail links were also extended and improved during his reign. All this, despite suffering the calamity of three successive draughts and famines. Author of “Palanpur Rajya-no-Itihas” (1912). Maj Palanpur Iqbal Infantry. Hon ADC to Governor of Bombay 1/4/1911. Attended the Coronation Durbar at Delhi 1911. Mbr Royal Soc of Arts (GB), Chess Assoc, etc. Rcvd: Delhi Durbar silver medal (1911). m. at Palanpur, 6th February 1920, Fatima Zohra Bakhte Begum Sahiba. He d. from pneumonic influenza, 9th March 1920 (bur. Lohani Maqbara, Palanpur), having had issue, a posthumous son:

Zubdat ul-Mulk, Shri Diwan Mahakhan NawabSir Sher Muhammad Khan Bahadur, Nawab of Palanpur, GCIE, by his wife, H.H. Begum Amir Bai Sahiba, educ. privately at Palanpur and Bombay, and with the Imperial Cadet Corps, Dehra Dun. Dir of Customs and Forestry Depts 1907-1911, MSC Palanpur State Council and Mbr in charge of Political, Judicial, Revenue, and Finance Depts 1911-1912. Appointed as Administrator of Palanpur State by his father 1912. Succeeded on his death, 28th September 1918. Ascended the musnaid, at Zorawar Palace, Palanpur, on the same day. Signed the instrument of accession to the Dominion of India, 15th August 1947. Merged his state into Bombay, 10th June 1948. He did much to build on the legacy of his distinguished father, particularly in improving agriculture and farm yields, through crop diversification. He also introduced far-reaching political reforms by promulgating the Palanpur State Reforms Act in 1939 which, amongst other things, established the first Raj Sabha with a majority of elected members.
