* Recognised by personal decision of the then Home Minister Dr K.N. Katju, despite the absence of documentary evidence of a marriage, the failure to produce statements by any celebrant or witnesses to the event, the inability to nominate any such individuals concerned, nor any bystanders who may possibly have had contemporary knowledge of the proceedings, be they family, household staff or servants. Furthermore, on the grounds of close consanguinity, any marriage between the parties would likely have been contrary to both the Hindu marriage laws as well as the civil law at that period. Dr Katju’s decision overturned a previous failed appeal in 1950 to his predecessor Sardar V. Patel, as well as subsequent declinations by the Rajpramukh and government of PEPSU.
