The Mukne Dynasty

GENEALOGY

Shrimant Jayadeorao [Jayaba] Mukne, a Poligar of the Konkan, who settled at  Mukne, near the Dal Pass, a village 16 miles from the holy city of Nasik. He captured the fortress of Jawhar in 1306. m. Shrimant Soubhagyavati Mohanabai Sahiba. He had issue, two sons:

1343 - … Meherban Shrimant Raja Nimshah Jayadeorao Mukne, Raja of Jawhar, elder son of Shrimant Jayadeorao [Jayappa] Mukne, by his wife, Shrimant Soubhagyavati Mohanabai Sahiba, educ. privately. Recognised as ruler of Jawhar and granted the title of Raja and name of Nimshah, by Emperor Muhammad Tagluq of Delhi, 5th June 1343. He ruled over a territory controlled through 22 forts and yielding annual revenue valued at £90,000 p.a. He had issue, a son:

… - … Meherban Shrimant Raja Muhammadshah Mukne, Raja of Jawhar, son and heir of Meherban Shrimant Raja Bhimshah Mukne, Raja of Jawhar, educ. privately. Succeeded on the death of his father. Captured in battle by Sultan Ahmad Shah Bahamani. Converted to Islam shortly before his marriage, taking the name and title of Muhammadshah. m. at Bidar, before 1435, a daughter of Sultan Shihab ud-dunya wa ud-din Ahmad Shah I al-Bahamani, Sultan of the Deccan. He had issue, a son (supposedly refused recognition by the sardars because he was a Muslim).

… - … Meherban Shrimant Raja Krishnashah I Mukne, Godharma Pratipalak, Raja of Jawhar, grandson of Shrimant Holkarao Jayadeorao Mukne, educ. privately. Proclaimed on the death of Muhammadshah, after the sardars refused to recognise his son as ruler because he was a Muslim*. He had issue, a son:

Note*: The number of generations appear to be too few for the two and a half centuries that elapsed between the marriage of Muhammadshah and the death of Vikramshah I. Consequently, this event may have taken place later than it appears in the family chronicle. The Islamic line probably ruled for a few generations and Krishnashah I may have been a descendant, rather than a grandson of Holkarao.

… - 1678 Meherban Shrimant Raja Vikramshah I Nimshah Mukne, Godharma Pratipalak, Raja of Jawhar, son of Meherban Shrimant Raja Nimshah II Krishnashah Mukne, Godharma Pratipalak, Raja of Jawhar, educ. privately. Succeeded on the death of his father. He allied himself with Shivaji the Great and joined him in the attack on Surat in 1664. A powerful and distinguished ruler, who maintained a small fleet to check the Portuguese and induced them to pay chauth for the Nagar Haveli district. He was k. by Peshwa Moropant Trimbak Pingle, at Salher, near Waghamba, 1678 having had issue, a son:

17xx - 1742 Meherban Shrimant Raja Krishnashah II Patangshah Mukne, Godharma Partipalak, Raja of Jawhar, elder son of Meherban Shrimant Raja Patangshah I Mukne, Godharma Partipalak, Raja of Jawhar, educ. privately. Succeeded on the death of his father. m. (first) Sakal Soubhagyavati Sampanna Shrimant Rani Sai Kunwarbai Sahiba. m. (second) Sakal Soubhagyavati Sampanna Shrimant Rani Mohan Kunwarbai Sahiba. He d.s.p. 1742, when his senior widow, Sai Kunwarbai adopted a son and successor.

1742 - 1758 Meherban Shrimant Raja Vikramshah II Krishnashah Mukne, Godharma Partipalak, Raja of Jawhar. A relative of Princess Amritkunverba of Dharampur. Adopted by Rani Sai Kunwarbai, senior widow of Raja Krishnashah II, 1742. Installed on the gadi, shortly afterwards. He was k. unm. by Rani Mohan Kunwarbai, 1758, when the state was placed under administration by the Peshwa.

1758 - 1765 Meherban Shrimant Raja Krishnashah III Vikramshah Mukne, Godharma Partipalak, Raja of Jawhar. b. as Malojirao Mukne. Appointd as successor to Vikramshah II by the Peshwa, but he placed Jawhar under management in 1761. m. Sakal Soubhagyavati Sampanna Shrimant Rani Rajasbai Sahiba. m. (d. by sati, at Jawhar, 1765). He d.s.p. at the Nagarkhana, Jawhar, 1765.

1768 - 1798 Meherban Shrimant Raja Patangshah II Krishnashah Mukne, Godharma Partipalak, Raja of Jawhar. b. as Shrimant Gangadhirao Mukne, educ. privately. Adopted by Rani Rajasbai, the widow of Raja Krishnashah III, in  1766. Placed on the gadi with the help of the Peishwa, 1768. Lost a great deal of territory to the latter in 1782, being permitted to retain a territory yielding just £1,500-2,000 p.a. He d. at Jawhar Fort, 1798, having had issue, three sons:

1798 - 1821  Meherban Shrimant Raja Vikramshah III Patangshah Mukne, Godharma Partipalak, Raja of Jawhar, eldest surviving son of Meherban Shrimant Raja Patangshah II Mukne, Godharma Partipalak, Raja of Jawhar, educ. privately. Appointed as Heir Apparent by his father. Allowed to succeeded on the death of his adoptive father, but placed under the supervision of the inamdar of Trimbak, 1798. m. Sakal Soubhagyavati Sampanna Shrimant Rani Sagunabai Sahiba, Regent for her son from 1821. He d. 1821, having had issue, a posthumous son and one daughter:

1821 - 1865 Meherban Shrimant Raja Patangshah III Vikramshah Mukne, Godharma Partipalak, Raja of Jawhar. b. posthumously, at Jawhar, 1821, only son of Meherban Shrimant Raja Vikramshah III Patangshah Mukne, Godharma Partipalak, Raja of Jawhar, by his wife, Sakal Soubhagyavati Sampanna Shrimant Rani Sagunabai Sahiba, Rani Regent of Jawhar, educ. privately. Succeeded at birth, 1821. Installed on the gadi at the Nagarkhana, Jawhar, 13th December 1822. Reigned under the Regency of his mother. m. (first) Sakal Soubhagyavati Sampanna Shrimant Rani Gopikabai Sahib (d. at Jawhar, 28th March 1875), Regent for her son and adopted grandson 1865-1875. m. (second) Sakal Soubhagyavati Sampanna Shrimant Rani Lakshmibai Sahiba (d. before 1854). m. (third) Sakal Soubhagyavati Sampanna Shrimant Rani Umaibai Sahiba. He d. at Bombay, 11th June 1865, having adopted his cousin as his son and successor:

1865  Meherban Shrimant Raja Vikramshah IV Patangshah Mukne, Godharma Partipalak, Raja of Jawhar. b. 1839, as Shrimant Narayandeo Prataprao Mukne, son of Shrimant Prataprao Madhavrao Mukne, sometime Regent and Heir Apparent of Jawhar, educ. privately. Adopted by his cousin, Raja Patangshah III Vikramshah, and appointed as Heir Apparent after the death of his father in 1854. Succeeded on the death of his adopted father, 29th June 1865. m. Sakal Soubhagyavati Sampanna Shrimant Rani Lakshmibai Sahiba (d. at Jawhar Palace, Poona, 20th May 1893). He d.s.p. at Jawhar Fort, 23rd July 1865, when his widow adopted a son and successor on his behalf and with the consent of Rani Gopikabai:
