Paduka Sri Sultan Musa Ghiath ud-din Riayat Shah ibni al-Marhum Sultan ‘Ala ud-din Sulaiman Shah, Sultan and Yang di-Pertuan of the State of Selangor Dar ul-Ihsan. b. at the Istana Bandar Temasha, Kampung Bandar, Jugra, Kuala Langat, 9th December 1893, eldest son of Colonel H.H. Paduka Sri Sultan Sir ‘Ala ud-din Sulaiman Shah ibni al-Marhum Yang di-Pertuan Muda Musa, Sultan of Selangor, GCMG, KCVO, by his first wife, H.H. Tunku Maharum binti Tunku Zia ud-din, Tengku Ampuan Paduka Sri Negara, educ. Victoria Institution, Kuala Lumpur, and Malay Coll, Kuala Kangsar. Granted the title of Tengku Putra Mahkota, 4th November 1903. Joined FMS Police Force as Assist Supt of Police 1913, retd as Assist Cmsnr of Police 1916, cmsnd as 2nd-Lieut Malay Volunteer Imfantry (MVI) 1916, prom Hon Lieut Malay Volunteer Force (MVF) 1/1/1925, prom Hon Capt 25/2/1932, ADC to the High Commissioner 1920-1930, Extra ADC 1903-1933, MSC Selangor 1920-1934, Vice-Presdt Selangor State Council 1925-1933, Mbr FMS Federal Council 1927-1933. Appointed as Heir Apparent and invested with the title of Raja Muda, 1919. Disinherited from his position as Heir Apparent and divested of the title of Raja Muda 31st October 1934. Granted the personal title of Tengku Kelana Jaya Petra, 20th July 1936. Appointed as Sultan by the Japanese occupying forces after they had deposed the legitimate ruler, his younger brother, 15th January 1942. A Japanese sword was then placed in his hands and he was ordered to decapitate him, but he refused to do so. Crowned at Istana Mahkota, Klang, 4th November 1943. Deposed on the return of the British Military Administration (BMA), 14th September 1945. Removed from the state and exiled to the Cocos-Keeling Islands but permitted to return and settle in Singapore in May 1946. m. (first) 1912, Y.M. Tengku Sharifa Mastura binti Sayyid Ahmad Shahabuddin (b. 1897; d.s.p. at the Istana Bank, Klang, 31st July 1959), crowned beside her husband as Tengku Permaisuri at Istana Mahkota, Klang 4th November 1943, deprived of that title 14th September 1945, daughter of Y.M. Tuan Sayyid Ahmad Shahabuddin, Tengku Suri, of Kedah, by his wife, Y.M. Tunku Mariam binti Tunku Zia ud-din, daughter of Y.A.M. Tunku Zia ud-din ibni al-Marhum Sultan Zain al-Rashid al-Mu’azzam Shah [Tunku Kudin] of Kedah, sometime Viceroy of Selangor. m. (second) Y.M. Tengku Jeriah binti Tengku Arifin, daughter of Y.M. Tengku Arifin, of Selasai, Langkat, Sumatra. m. (third) Cik Puan Anjang binti ‘Abdu’llah. He d. at Kuala Lampur, 8th November 1955 (bur. Marhum ‘Atiqu’llah Mausoleum, Klang).

Malay Sch, Bandar Kuala Langat and Malay Coll, Kuala Kangsar. Presdt Sultan ‘Ala ud-din Mosque Cttee 1925, ADC to his father 1931, Presdt Arabic Schools Brd 1933, MSC Selangor 1934-1938. Granted the title of Tengku Panglima di-Raja, 1920, promoted to Tengku Laksamana in 1931. Appointed as Heir Apparent 31st October 1934 and formally installed with the title of Raja Muda, at Istana Mahkora, Klang, 20th July 1936. Succeeded on the death of his father, 31st March 1938. Installed, at Istana Mahkora, Klang, 4th April 1938. Crowned as Sultan dan Yang di-Pertuan Negeri Selangor Dar ul-Ihsan, at Istana Mahkora, Klang, 26th January 1939. Summoned to King’s House, Kuala Lumpur, and deposed by the Japanese military commander, 15th January 1942. Restored on the return of the British Military Administration to Klang, 14th September 1945. Attended the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, at Westminster Abbey in London, 1953. Elected as the fist Deputy Supreme Head of State of the Federation of Malaya with the title of Timbalan Yang di-Pertuan Agong, 3rd August 1957. Installed at Istana Negara, Kuala Lumpur, 2nd September 1957. Became King of the Federation of Malaya with the title of Yang di-Pertuan Agung on the death of the incumbent, 1st April 1960.
