1932 - 1974 Colonel H.R.H. Paduka Sri Baginda Sultan Sir Abu Bakar Riayat ud-din al-Mu’azzam Shah ibni al-Marhum Sultan Sir ‘Abdu’llah al-Muhtasim Billah Shah, Sultan and Yang di-Pertuan of the State of Pahang Dar ul-Mukmar, GCMG (1.6.1953, KCMG 3.6.1935, CMG 2.1.1933). b. at Istana Hinggap, Pekan Lama, 29th May 1904, second son of Colonel H.H. Paduka Sri Baginda Sultan Sir ‘Abdu’llah al-Muhtasim Billah Shah ibni al-Marhum Sultan Sir Ahmad Mua’azzam Shah, Sultan and Yang di-Pertuan of the State of Pahang, KCMG, by his second wife, H.H. Tengku Hajjah Kalsum binti Tun ‘Abdu’llah [Som binti Tun], Tengku Ampuan Besar, educ. Malay Sch, Pakan and Malay Coll, Kuala Kangsar. Joined Pahang Civil Service 1923, Land Officer Kuala Kangsar and Telok Anson 1928-1929, Assist Collector of Land Revenue at Temerloh 1929-1930. Appointed as Heir Apparent with the title of Tengku Mahkota, 4th June 1930. Succeeded on the death of his father, 23rd June 1932. Proclaimed at Pekan, 24th June 1932. Installed at Kota Istana Pantei, Pekan, 28th May 1933. Attended the Coronation of King-Emperor George VI and Queen-Empress Elizabeth at Westminster Abbey in London, 11th May 1937. Cmsnd as 2nd-Lieut. 4th (Pahang) Btn, Malay Volunteer Infantry 1931, resig 22/6/1932, Hon Col 4th (Pahang) Btn, FMS Volunteer Force 23/61932-1942. Japanese forces occupied Pahang 3rd January 1942 and immediately imposed a military administration over the state. The sultan secretly supported the formation and organisation of the Tentera Wataniah in 1942, of which he became titular C-in-C. He also supported cooperation with the clandestine activities of “Force 136” and was taken under their protection 17th August 1945. He subsequently returned to the capital under escort of “Force 136” and resumed full control 8th September 1945. Hon Col The Royal Malay Regt 3/9/1959-1974. Raja Hajjah Fatima binti al-Marhum Sultan Sir Iskandar Shah al-Kaddasullah, Tengku Ampuan Besar (b. 1910; d. at the Istana Indra Puri, Pekan, 23rd June 1988 bur. there at the Royal Mausoleum, Sultan ‘Abdu’llah Grand Mosque), granted the title of Tengku Puan 4th June 1930, and installed as Tengku Ampuan at the Istana Sri Terentang, Pekan, 28th May 1933, rcvd: DK Pahang (28.5.1970), Jubilee Medal, Pahang (31.5.1957), Malaysia Installation (10.7.1980), etc, eldest daughter of Colonel H.H. Paduka Sri Tuanku Sultan Sir Iskandar Shah al-Kaddasu’llah ibni al-Marhum Sultan Sir Idris Murshid al-Azzam Shah Rahmatu’llah, Sultan and Yang di-Pertuan of the State of Perak, GCMG, KCVO, by his first wife, Y.A.M. Tengku Nong Fatima binti al-Marhum Al-Sultan Sir Ahmad al-Mu’azzam Shah, third daughter of H.H. Paduka Sri Baginda Sultan Sir Ahmad al-Mu’azzam Shah ibni al-Marhum Dato’ Bendahara Sri Maharaja Tun ‘Ali, Sultan and Yang di-Pertuan of the State of Pahang, KCMG. m. (second) Cik Siti Nah (d. at Istana Sa’adah, Pekan, 1984). m. (third) at Pekan Lama, 1938, Y.A.M. Tengku Hajjah Azam binti Tengku Umar (b. at Pekan, 1922), Presdt Women’s Institute (WI) of Pahang, rcvd: AMN (7.6.1967), PJK (29.5.1962), Jubilee Medal, Pahang (31.5.1957), daughter of Y.A.M. Tengku Umar ibni al-Marhum Sultan Sir Ahmad Mua’azzam Shah, Tengku Setia di-Raja, by his second wife, Y.M. Encik Engku Umaiyah binti Engku Muda Mansur [Ku Yah], fourth daughter of Y.M. Tun Mansur bin Dato’ Bendahara Sri Maharaja Tun ‘Ali, Engku Muda, of Kampung Marhum. m. (fourth) (div. 1953) Cik Mek Mas. m. (fifth) at the Istana Pahang, Kuala Lumpur, 19th April 1953 (div.), Cik Hafsah binti Imam Mat (b. 1931), a former dancer with the Sentosa Joget at Lucky World, Kuala Lumpur. m. (sixth) Cik Siti Zainab binti Shaikh Ahmad. m. (seventh) at Bentong, 10th April 1957 (div.), Cik Hathifah binti ‘Abdu’l Rashid Alias (b. 1937). m. (eighth) 1963, Y.H. Dato’ Maria Menado (b. at Menado, North Sulawesi, 1931), née Liesbet Dotulong, a former screen actress, MD Maria Menado Productions 1958-1963, and former wife of Inche ‘Abdu’l Razak bin Shaikh Muhammad. He d. at the Istana Peninjau, Pekan, 7th May 1974 (bur. at the Royal Mausoleum, Sultan ‘Abdu’llah Grand Mosque), having had issue, eighteen sons and seventeen daughters:
