1881 – 1943 Colonel H.H. al-Azizzu ul-Mulk al-Qadir al-Ghalib Ghahr al-Maghlub, us-Sultan Khalifatu’llah ‘Ala Da’irah Kedah, Paduka Sri Sultan ‘Abdu’l Hamid Halim Shah II ibni al-Marhum Sultan Ahmad Taj ud-din al-Mukarram Shah, Sultan and Yang di-Pertuan of the State of Kedah Dar ul-Aman, KCMG (19.6.1911). b. 4th June 1864, third son of H.H. Paduka Sri Sultan Ahmad Taj ud-din III al-Mukarram Shah ibni al-Marhum Sultan Zain al-Rashid al-Mu’azzam Shah, Sultan of Kedah, KCMG, by his first wife, Wan Hajar binti Datuk Wan Ismail, Mak Wan Besar, educ. privately. Appointed as Heir Apparent with the title of Phra Seninarungritra Raja Muda Muang Saiburi on April 1874. Invested at the Grand Palace, Bangkok, February 1880. Succeeded on the death of his brother, 22nd September 1881 (recognised by the King of Siam, 21st January 1882). Reconised by the King of Siam and granted the title of Phraya Ritisungrama Ramabhakti Sri Sultan Muhammad Ratna Raja Bodindra Surindra Vora Varman Phraya Saipuri on 21st January 1882. Invested with the title of Chao Phraya Ritisungrama Ramabhakti Sri Sultan Muhammad Ratna Raja Bodindra Surindra Vora Varman Badung Danubamarungsa Kedah Negara Amuna Ratanakhitra Pradhitsa Rajayasawariyadipati Vikramasinha Chao Phaya Saipuri 29th August 1895. High Cmsnr of Monthon Saiburi (consisting of Kedah, Perlis, and Setul) 1898-1909. Kedah was transferred to British Protection, 16th July 1909. Attended the Coronation of the King-Emperor George V and Queen-Empress Mary, at Westminster Abbey in London, 1911. The Japanese invaded Kedah on 8th December and fully overran the Sultanate on 15th December 1941. The Sultan, who had originally been settled in Penang for his protection and later fled into the jungles on the back of one of his sons, was induced to surrender to the Japanese authorities by members of his own family, and forced to sign over control of the state recognising Japanese authority on 19th December 1941. (first) Y.M. Tunku Kutam (d.s.p. young), his first cousin. m. (second) Y.M. Cik Samanarit, a Siamese lady. m. (third) Y.M. Cik Sepa Chandra [Sepacendera] (d. at the Istana Sepacendera, Kampung Baru, Alor Star, 10th February 1907, bur. there at the Royal Cemetery, Langgar), née Thiab, from Kumpulan Chaiya, Siam. m. (fourth) Y.M. Cik Larasa, Che’ Puan Paduka Bonda (d. at Alor Star, 12th May 1946, bur. there at the Royal Cemetery, Langgar), daughter of Lebai Mat Amin. m. (fifth) Y.M. Tuan Sharifa Mariam binti Sayyid Muhammad Al-Idrus. m. (sixth) (div.) Y.M. Nai Sofiah binti ‘Abdu’llah (m. second, Wan Basor ‘Ali bin Wan Salim, and d. 22nd August 1948, leaving further issue by her second husband), a lady from Siam. m. (seventh) at Alor Star, 1886, Y.M. Mak Cik Manjalara binti Long Nara [Cik Menyalara], Mak Che’ (b. 1874; d. at Alor Star, 23rd April 1941, aged 67, bur. there at the Royal Cemetery, Langgar), née Nearng, daughter of Luang Nara Puriraksha [Nara Boriak] [Kleb], sometime Governor of Nanthapuri, in Siam, son of Chao Phaya Mahakota, of Mataban, by his wife, Im. m. (eighth) at Padang Pusing, Kuala Muda, 1892, Y.M. Sharifa Seha binti Sayyid Husain Jamal ul-Lail (d. at Alor Star, 10th July 1940, bur. there at the Royal Cemetery, Langgar). m. (ninth) Y.M.  Sharifa Fatima binti Sayyid Idrus Shahabudin (d. at Alor Star, 8th September 1949, bur. there at the Royal Cemetery, Langgar). Three of the wives other than Sepa Chandra and Manjalara were also Siamese and had the birth names: Choi, who had five children, Sirik who had seven children, and Phuang who had one child. He d. at Istana Anak Bukit, Alor Star, 13th May 1943 (bur. there at the Royal Cemetery, Langgar), having had issue, twenty-one sons and eighteen daughters:
