1854 - 1879 H.H. al-Azizzu ul-Mulk al-Qadir al-Ghalib Ghahr al-Maghlub, us-Sultan Khalifatu’llah ‘Ala Da’irah Kedah, Paduka Sri Sultan Ahmad Taj ud-din III al-Mukarram Shah ibni al-Marhum Sultan Zain al-Rashid al-Mu’azzam Shah, Sultan and Yang di-Pertuan of the State of Kedah Dar ul-Aman, KCMG (5.4.1879). b. at Georgetown, Penang, 1832, eldest son of H.H. Paduka Sri Sultan Zain al-Rashid al-Mu’azzam Shah I ibni al-Marhum Sultan Ahmad Taj ud-din Halim Shah, Sultan and Yang di-Pertuan of the State of Kedah Dar ul-Aman, by his first wife, Wan Maheran binti Dato’ Wan Muhammad Sadiq, Mas Iran, daughter of Dato’ Wan Muhammad Sadiq, Dato’ Bendahara Sri Paduka Maharaja Suriya, educ. privately at Malacca. Succeeded on the death of his father, 13th March 1854. Granted the title of Phraya Saiburi by the King of Siam in 1855, prom to Chao Phraya Ritsungrama Ramabhakti Sri Sultan Muhammad Ratna Rajamumin Surindra Ravi Varman Badung Danubamrangsa Kedah Negara Amara Ranakhatra Pradhitsaratta Rajayasawariya Adipati Vikramsinha Chao Phraya Saiburi. Secured the return of Kuban Pasu from Tunku Ishak, November 1864. A great moderniser who took much interest in the sea and ships and played European music. He founded the first modern school at Padan Lepai in 1861, recruited a doctor, reformed the judiciary and the military forces, and established a police force. He also began the contruction of an extensive road network. Rcvd: GC of the Order of the Crown of Siam (1872). m. (first) 1854, Wan Hajar binti Dato’ Wan Ismail, Mak Wan Besar (b. at Alor Janggus, 11th November 1841; d. at Dalam Kota, Alor Star, 7th February 1909, bur. Kota Langgar), rcvd: Dame Cdr of the Order of Chula Chom Klao of Siam, younger daughter of Dato’ Wan Ismail bin Dato’ Sri Paduka Raja Laksamana, sometime Chief Minister of Kedah, by his wife, Wan Jingga binti Dato’ Wan Muhammad Sadiq, daughter of Dato’ Wan Muhammad Sadiq, Dato’ Bendahara Sri Paduka Maharaja Suriya. m. (second) at Bangkok, 25th December 1855, Wan Jahara binti Long Nik Abidin [Wan Jah] (d. at the Istana, Alor Star, 1907), adopted daughter of the Chief Minister of Siam, and daughter of Long Nik Abidin, of one of the ruling houses of Patani. m. (third) 1873, Y.A.M. Tengku Cik Fatima binti al-Marhum Sultan ‘Ali Iskandar Shah (d. at Singapore, 1895), daughter of H.H. Paduka Sri Sultan Muhammad ‘Ali Iskandar Shah ibni al-Marhum Sultan Husain Mu’azzam Shah, Sultan and Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Johor and all its dependencies, by his third wife, Cik Serimbuk binti Mu’min [Inche’ Sarimbah], daughter of Daing Muhammad Amin, a penghulu from Umbai, Malacca. m. (fourth) (div.) Y... binti ‘Abdu’llah (m. second, Wan Salim bin Wan Ibrahim Kecik). He d. at the Istana Kota Star, 22nd June 1879 (bur. there at the Royal Cemetery, Kota Langgar), having had issue, nine sons and seven daughters:

Paduka Sri Sultan Ahmad Taj ud-din III al-Mukarram Shah ibni al-Marhum Sultan Zain al-Rashid al-Mu’azzam Shah, Sultan of Kedah, KCMG, by his second wife, Wan Jahara binti Long Nik Abidin [Wan Jah], educ. privately. Succeeded on the death of his father, 22nd June 1879. Granted the title of Phraya Ritsungrama Ramabhakti Sri Sultan Muhammad Rajamunira Surindra Varman Phraya Saiburi on April 1874. Invested at the Grand Palace, Bangkok, January 1880. Reigned under the regency of his uncle, Tunku Yusuf. m. at Alor Star, April 1875, H.H. Tunku Mariam binti Tunku Zia ud-din (m. second, 1881, H.H. Tunku Kasim ibni al-Marhum Sultan Ahmad Taj ud-din Mukarram Shah – see below. m. third, 1895, Y.M. Tuan Sayyid Ahmad Shahabudin, Tengku Suri, by whom she left further issue), eldest daughter of H.H. Tunku Zia ud-din ibni al-Marhum Sultan Zain al-Rashid al-Mu’azzam Shah [Tunku Kudin], Viceroy of Selangor. He d. at the Istana, Alor Star, 22nd September 1881 (bur. there at the Royal Cemetery, Kota Langgar), having had issue, one son and one daughter:
