1943 – 1958 Colonel H.H. Sultan Badlishah ibni al-Marhum Sultan ‘Abdu’l Hamid Halim Shah, Sultan and Yang di-Pertuan of the State of Kedah Dar ul-Aman, KCMG (1.1.1948, CMG 1.1.1936), KBE (c12.6.1941). b. at Alor Star, 17th March 1894, seventh son of Colonel H.H. Sultan ‘Abdu’l Hamid Halim Shah II ibni al-Marhum Sultan Ahmad Taj ud-din al-Mukarram Shah, Sultan of Kedah, KCMG, by his fourth wife, Nai Sofiah binti ‘Abdu’llah, educ. Jalan Bahru Malay Sch, Alor Star, Topeat Coll for Royal Pages and King’s Coll, Bangkok, Siam, and Wadham Coll, Oxford. Adopted son of King Rama VI of Siam. Joined Siamese Civil Service 1921, and served with the Privy Purse Dept and Ministry of the Interior in Bangkok 1921-1925, returned to Kedah and joined Kedah Civil Service 1926, State Treasurer of Kedah 1926-1935. Appointed as Heir Apparent 7th March 1935 and formally invested with the title of Raja Muda, 21st March 1935. Regent of Kedah 5th December 1937-13th May1943. Succeeded on the death of his father, 13th May 1943. Installed 15th May 1943. Deposed by the Japanese on 20th August 1943 and the state ceded to Thailand on 18th October 1943, as part of the agreement, which had allowed the Japanese to invade Malaya from Thai territory. Renamed Saiburi Samak and placed under a Siamese Governor. Restored on the return of the British, 8th September 1945. Hon Col Kedah Volunteer Force 16/1/1938-1941. Granted the title of Phraya Sri Surindra Ravivarman by his adoptive father. Rcvd: Silver Jubilee (1935) and Coron medals (1937 and 1953), Companion of the Orders of the White Elephant and Crown of Thailand. m. (first) at the Balai Besar, Alor Star, 1924, Y.M. Tunku Sofiah binti Tunku Mahmud [Sepiah] (b. 29th April 1910; d. from injuries received in a car crash, at Alor Star, 10th March 1934, bur. there at the Royal Cemetery, Langgar), daughter of Colonel H.H. Tunku Mahmud ibni al-Marhum Sultan Ahmad Taj ud-din Mukarram Shah, KBE, CMG, sometime Regent and Presdt of the State Council, by his wife, Y.M. Hajjah Zainab binti Awang Ahmad, Che’ Puan Muda. m. (second) … m. (third) at Trengganu, 31st October 1935, H.R.H. Tengku Asma binti al-Marhum Sultan Sulaiman Badr ul-’Alam Shah, Tunku Ampuan (b. 25th October 1917; d. at Alor Star, 13th May 1996, bur. Royal Cemetery), crowned as Sultana of Kedah and granted the style of Her Highness 15th May 1943, and granted the title of Tunku Ampuan with the style of Her Royal Highness from 23rd February 1959, second daughter of H.H. Sultan Sulaiman Badr ul-’Alam Shah ibni al-Marhum Sultan Zainal-Abidin, Sultan of Trengganu, by his wife, H.H. Tengku Mariam binti al-Marhum Al-Sultan Sir Ahmad al-Mu’azzam Shah, daughter of H.H. Paduka Sri Baginda Sultan Sir Ahmad al-Mu’azzam Shah ibni al-Marhum Dato’ Bendahara Sri Maharaja Tun ‘Ali, Sultan and Yang di-Pertuan of the State of Pahang, KCMG. He d. from heart failure, at the General Hospital, Alor Star, 13th July 1958 (bur. there at the Royal Cemetery, Langgar), having had issue, seven sons and seven daughters:

1958 Field Marshal H.R.H. al-Sultan al-Mu’tasimu Billahi Muhib ud-din Tuanku Alhaj ‘Abdu’l Halim Mu’azzam Shah ibni al-Marhum Sultan Badlishah, Sultan and Yang di-Pertuan of the State of Kedah Dar ul-Aman, GCB (c 22.2.1972), KStJ (14.9.1972). b. at Istana Anak Bukit, Kedah, 28th November 1927, second son of Colonel H.H. Sultan Badlishah ibni al-Marhum Sultan ‘Abdu’l Hamid Halim Shah, Sultan of Kedah, KCMG, KBE, by his first wife, Y.M. Tunku Sofiah binti Tunku Mahmud, daughter of Colonel H.H. Tunku Mahmud ibni al-Marhum Sultan Ahmad Taj ud-din Mukarram Shah, KBE, CMG, sometime Regent and Presdt of the State Council, educ. Malay Sch, Titi Gajah and Sultan ‘Abdu’l Hamid Coll, Alor Star, and Wadham Coll, Oxford. Appointed as Heir Apparent with the title of Raja Muda, 6th August 1949. Cadet Kedah Civil Service 1955, Attaché Alor Star District Office 1955-1957, and State Treasury 1957-1958. Regent of Kedah, 9th March 1957 to 13th July 1958. Succeeded on the death of his father, 13th July 1958. Proclaimed 14th July 1958 and formally installed at the Balai Besar, Kota Star Palace, Alor Star, 20th February 1959 (in a ceremony held for the first time since 1710). Elected as Deputy Supreme Head of State of Malaysia with the title of Timbalan Yang di-Pertuan, 21st September 1965. Became King of Malaysia with the title of Yang di-Pertuan Agong and style of His Majesty, 21st September 1970. Installed as Deputy Supreme Head of State for a second time with the title of Timbalan Yang di-Pertuan, 13th December 2006. Installed at Kuala Lampur, 20th February 1971. Completed his reign and returned to Kedah, 21st September 1975.  Installed for a record second time as Yang di-Pertuan Agung with the style of His Majesty at Parliament House, Kuala Lumpur, 13th December 2011. Tuanku Sultana Hajah Haminah binti Hajji Hamidun, Sultana of Kedah (b. at Bagan Serai, 15th July 1953), styled Che’ Puan Kedah, granted the title of Sultana of Kedah 21st November 2003 and formally installed at the Istana Anak Bukit, Alor Star, 9th January 2004, installed as Queen Consort of Malaysia as Raja Permairusi Agong with the style of Her Majesty at Parliament House, Kuala Lumpur, 13th December 2011, rcvd: DK of Kedah (9.1.2004), DKH (16.7.2008), daughter of Haji Hamidun bin Thaib, of Kampung Matang Jelutong, Bagan Serai, Perak.
