Sultan Badlishah ibni al-Marhum Sultan ‘Abdu’l Hamid Halim Shah, Sultan and Yang di-Pertuan of the State of Kedah Dar ul-Aman, KCMG (1.1.1948, CMG 1.1.1936), KBE (c12.6.1941). b. at Alor Star, 17th March 1894, seventh son of Colonel H.H. Sultan ‘Abdu’l Hamid Halim Shah II ibni al-Marhum Sultan Ahmad Taj ud-din al-Mukarram Shah, Sultan of Kedah, KCMG, by his fourth wife, Nai Sofiah binti ‘Abdu’llah, educ. Jalan Bahru Malay Sch, Alor Star, Topeat Coll for Royal Pages and King’s Coll, Bangkok, Siam, and Wadham Coll, Oxford. Adopted son of King Rama VI of Siam. Joined Siamese Civil Service 1921, and served with the Privy Purse Dept and Ministry of the Interior in Bangkok 1921-1925, returned to Kedah and joined Kedah Civil Service 1926, State Treasurer of Kedah 1926-1935. Appointed as Heir Apparent 7th March 1935 and formally invested with the title of Raja Muda, at the Balai Besar, Alor Star, 21st March 1935. Regent of Kedah 5th December 1937-13th May1943. Succeeded on the death of his father, 13th May 1943. Installed at the Balai Besar, Alor Star, 15th May 1943. Removed from any active part in the state administration by the Japanese authorities on 20th August 1943 and the state ceded to Thailand on 18th October 1943, as part of the agreement, which had allowed the Japanese to invade Malaya from Thai territory. Renamed Saiburi Samak and placed under a Siamese Governor. Restored on the return of the British, 8th September 1945. Hon Col Kedah Volunteer Force 16/1/1938-1941. Granted the title of Phraya Sri Surindra Ravivarman by his adoptive father.
