Proclaimed on the disappearance of his father and reigned under the regency of his maternal grandfather, Phaya Sena Surindra [Sen Soulinthara], 1571. Deposed by him 1572. Taken prisoner by the Burmese and sent to Burma, 1575. Always recognised as the rightful King by the people of Laos who campaigned for his return for many years until they finally succeeded when they sent a delegation to Pegu after he had come of age in 1590. Crowned at Vientiane, 1591. Released from captivity in Burma and returned to Vientiane by King Nanda Bayin. Crowned there, 1591. Declared his independence from the Burmese in 1593, but suffered several attacks from them throughout his reign. He d.s.p. 1596 (succ. by his cousin)..

SamdachBrhat-Anya ChaoVaraVarmanDharmikaRajaJayaSriSadhanaKanayudha [Vorouvongsa II], King of Lan Xang. b. 1585, son of Brhat Varapitra [Vorapita], sometime Regent, by his wife, Princess Dharmagayi, youngest daughter of SamdachBrhatChaoBuddhisaRajaMahaDharmikadasaLankanakunaMaharaja AdipatiChakrapatiBhuminaNarindraRajaSriSadhanaKanayudha [Phothisarath I], King of Lan Xang. Appointed as SamdachBrhat-Anya ChaoMahaUparaja. Chosen by the nobles after the death of his cousin, 1596. Reigned under the regency of his father, captured by rebels and proclaimed king in 1599. Reconciled with his father, who renounced the regency and was crowned with the reign name of VaraVarmanDharmikaRajaJaya, 1603. Restored the independence of Removed his seat to Muang Kun, outside Luang Prabang, in 1600. Laos from the Burmese. Deposed by his son, 1621. m. several wives, including 1596, Nang Kaen, a former consort of his father, Brhat Varapitra [Vorapita], sometime Regent. He was k. on the orders of his son, 1622, having had issue, five sons, including:

1621 - 1622 H.M. SamdachBrhatChao Maha Upayuvaraja [Ouphagnauvarath I*], King of Lan Xang . b. 1597, educ. privately. Appointed as Heir Apparent with the title of Upyuvaraja, by his father. Deposed his father and seized the throne, 1621. Reigned for nine months. He d. under mysterious circumstances, 1622, having had issue.
* this is a French corruption of the title Upayuvaraja, meaning "Great Joint King", or "Crown Prince", not a name. His reign and personal names are not known.

SamdachBrhat-Anya ChaoBanditaBuddhisaRajaSriSadhanaKanayudha [Phothisarath II], King of Lan Xang. b. 1552, as Chao Ong-Lo, eldest son of SamdachBrhat-Anya ChaoSumangalaAyakaBudhisanaRajaSriSadhanaKanayudha, King of Lan Xang. Granted the title of of PhyaMahanama and BrhatChaoNegaraLuangVijitaDutsiditaRajadhaniSikhutabuna-Luang. Governor of Sikotabong before his accession. Raised to the throne by the nobles, after the death of the “Upayuvaraja”, 1622. He d. 1627.
1627 - 1633 H.M. SamdachBrhat-Anya ChaoManikyaKaevaRajaSriSadhanaKanayudha [Mom Kaeo], King of Lan Xang, second son of son of SamdachBrhat-Anya ChaoSumangalaAyakaBudhisanaRajaSriSadhanaKanayudha, King of Lan Xang, educ. privately. Raised to the throne by the nobles, after the death of his elder brother, 1627.His reign was filled with quarrels and rebellions between various claimants to the throne. He d. 1633, having had issue, two sons:
1633 - 1637 H.M. SamdachBrhatChaoDharmakamaRajaSriSadhanaKanayudha [Ton Kham or Ouphagnauvarath* II], King of Lan Xang, elder son of H.M. SamdachBrhat-Anya ChaoManikyaKaevaRajaSriSadhanaKanayudha [Mom Kaeo], King of Lan Xang, educ. privately. Appointed by his father as Heir Apparent and ivested with the title of Upayuvaraja, 1627. Succeeded on the death of his father, taking the reign name of SamdachBrhatChaoDharmakamaRajaSriSadhanaKanayudha, 1633. He d. 1637 (succ. by his younger brother), having had issue, three sons:
1) Prince (Sadet Chao Fa) Somaputra [Som Phou]. Escaped to Hue after his younger brother ascended the throne in 1638. m. (first) ……. m. (second) H.R.H. Princess Sumangala Kumari (m. second, at Hue, Annam, after 1688, Na Bua, PhyaSenadipati [Senna-tip], by whom she had a further son: Thao Nong, the half-brother of Ong Lo), daughter of H.M. SamdachBrhatChaoSuriyaVarmanDharmikaRajaParamaPavitraPrasidhadhirajaSriSadhanaKanayudha, King of Lan Xang. He d. at Hue, Annam, 1688, having had issue, two sons:
a) Prince (Sadet Chao Jaya Anga) Hue [Sai Ong Hue], who succeeded as H.M. Samdach BrhatChaoMaha Sri Jaya Setha Adiraja Darmikaraja Chandrapuri Sri Sadhana Kanayudha [Sethathirat II], 1st King of Lan-Xang Vientiane – see Laos (Vientiane).
2) Prince (Chao Fa) Bunsaya [Boun-Sou]. Entered the priesthood after after his younger brother ascended the throne in 1638. He d. at Poo Ho Poo Hong monastery.
3) Prince (Chao Fa) Suriyalinga Kumara [Soulinga Khoumane], who succeeded as H.M. SamdachBrhatChaoSuriyalingaVarmanDharmikaRajaParamaPavitraPrasidhadhirajaSriSadhanaKanayudha [Sulingvongsa], King of Lan Xang – see below.
1637 - 1638 H.M. SamdachBrhatChaoVijayaRajaSriSadhanaKanayudha [Vickhsai], King of Lan XangXang, younger son of H.M. SamdachBrhat-Anya ChaoManikyaKaevaRajaSriSadhanaKanayudha [Mom Kaeo], King of Lan Xang, educ. privately. Succeeded on the death of his elder brother, 1637. He d. 1638, having had issue, two sons:
1) H.H. Prince (Chao Fa) Puya [Bou], educ. privately. Fled to Muang Xieng-Khan after the accession of his cousin, Suriya Varman, in 1638. He subsequently took holy orders. He d. at Nakorn Panom, having had issue, a son:
a) H.M. ChaoPhyaNandarattaSriSadhanaKanayudha [Nan Tharat], King of Lan Xang – see below.
2) H.H. Prince (Chao Fa) Jaya [Soi], educ. privately. Fled to Sapuluang after the accession of his cousin, Suriya Varman, in 1638.
1638 - 1690 H.M. SamdachBrhatChaoSuriyalingaVarmanDharmikaRajaParamaPavitraPrasidhadhirajaSriSadhanaKanayudha [Sulingvongsa], King of Lan Xang. b. 1618, as Prince (Chao Fa) Suriyalinga Kumara [Soulinga Khoumane], youngest son of H.M. SamdachBrhatChaoDharmakamaRajaSriSadhanaKanayudha [Ton Kham or Ouphagnauvarath* II], King of Lan Xang, educ. privately. Raised to the throne by the most powerful nobles in the kingdom, in preference to his elder brothers and the sons of his uncle, 1638. A great and benevolent ruler, just and enlightened and a patron of religion and the arts. Made peace with Siam, fixed the boundaries between the two realms and built the pagoda of Songrak together with King Narai to mark the occasion. Received the first European envoys into Laos: the Dutch under Van Wuysthof in 1641, and the Venetians under Leria in 1642. m. (first) … m. (second) at Luang Prabang, 1652, H.H. Princess (Sadu Chao Nying) Kinichandra [Kène Chan], the abducted daughter of Princess (Brhat Chao Nang) Kham San, Princess of Xieng Xouang. m. (a) a daughter of King Lê-duy-Ky, of Annam. He d. 1690, having had issue, two sons and two daughters:
1) Prince (Chao Fa) Indra Brahma [Enta-Prohm], Chao RajaYudha [Ratsavuth]. b. at Luang Prabang, 1642 (s/o the first wife). Appointed as Heir Apparent by his father and invested with the title of Chao Raja Yudha. m. Princess Chandra Kumari [Chanta Khouman], sister of Prince Indra Kumara and daughter of the Hsenwifa of Sipsòng Panna, in yunan. He d.v.p. (k. by his father for adultery) having had issue, three sons:
a) Prince (Sadu Chao Jaya) Kinkidsaraja [King-Kitsarath], who succeeded as H.M. SamdachBrhatChaoBrhatKinkidsarajaSriSadhanaKanayudha [King-Kitsarath], 1st King of Lan Xang Hom Khao (s/o Chandra Kumari) – see below.
b) Prince (Chao Anga) Naka [Ong-Nok].
c) Prince (Sadu Chao Jaya) Indra Sena [Intha Son], who succeeded as H.M. SamdachBrhatChaoRajaIndraSenaParamaPavitraSriTatanaUdanaChakrapatirajaChaoAngaSriSadhanaKanayudha [Intha Son], King of Lan Xang Hom Khao (s/o Chandra Kumari) – see below.
2) A son, who fled to Ayudhya with his mother, step-mother and 600 followers in February 1686 after his father ordered their execution because he was found to be co-habiting with his half-sister with their full knowledge.
1) Princess (Chao Fa Nying) Sumangala Kumari (d/o the first wife). m. (first) as his second wife, her uncle, Prince (Chao) Somaputra [Som Phou] (d. at Hue, Annam, 1688), eldest son of H.M. SamdachBrhatChaoDharmagavaSriSadhanaKanayudha, King of Lan Xang. m. (second) 1689, Na Bua, PhyaSenadivya [Saentip] (k. by Phya Chan, 1690). She had issue, one son, by her first husband (see above), and two further sons by her second husband:
a) Prince (Chao Anga) Nungaya [Ong Nong] (s/oPhyaSenadivya). Sent to Luang Prabang in order to accept the submission of Prince Kitsarath 1700.
b) Prince (Chao) Nakasatra Sungaya [Nokasat Song], who became H.M. Samdach BrhatSadu Chao Jaya Sri Samudha Bhuddhankana [Soi Si Samout Phouthong Koun], King of Negara Champa Nagapuri Sri [Nakhon Champa Nakapurisi] (s/oPhyaSenadivya) – see Laos (Champasak).
2) Princess (Chao Fa Nying) Suman… Kumari. m. at Luang Prabang, ca. 1694, H.M. SamdachBrhatChaoDevaniasenaChandralayaRajaSriSadhanaKanayudha [Tian Thala], King of Lan Xang (d. by suicide, 1696) – see below.
1690 - 1695 H.M. SamdachBrhatChaoDevaniasenaChandralayaRajaSriSadhanaKanayudha [Tian Thala], King of Lan Xang, educ. privately. From a distinguished noble family unconnected to the Royal Family, he rose in the administration and was appointed to the position of Prime Minister with the title of PhyaMuangChandra by King Suriyalingga Kumara. He seized the throne on the death of the King in 1690, strengthening his position to a degree by marrying his younger daughter. However, he was unpopular with the people and the principal nobles, who never fully accepted his pretentions to the throne. Deposed by Nan Tharat, the Governor of Nakhone, 1695. m. ca. 1694, Princess (Chao Fa Nying) Suman… Kumari, younger daughter of H.M. SamdachBrhatChaoSuriya Varman Dharmika Raja Parama Pavitra Prasidhadhiraja, King of Lan Xang. He d. (committed suicide), 1696.
1695 - 1698 H.M. SamdachBrhatChaoPhyaNanda RajaSriSadhanaKanayudha [Nan Tharat], King of Lan Xang. Governor of Nakhone before his succession. Seized power from King Tian Thala, 1695. Deposed and k. by Sai Ong Hue, 1698.
