GENEALOGY

Meherban Shrimant Sayaji Lokhende, Patil of Parad, in the Shiviri pargana, near Daulatabad. He was k. in a skirmish with, Shivaji II Chhatrapati Maharaj, Raja of Satara, at Parad, August 1707, having had issue, two sons:

1) Shrimant Ranoji Sayaji Lokhende, who became Meherban Shrimant Fatehsinh I Shivaji Raje Bhonsle, Raja of Akalkot – see below.Copyright© Christopher Buyers
2) Meherban Shrimant Bahaji Sayaji Lokhende, Patil of Parad. He had issue:
- a) Kumar Shahaji Bahaji Lokhende, who was adopted by his natural uncle and succeeded as Meherban Shrimant Shahaji I Fatehsinh Raje [Bala Sahib] Bhonsle, Raja of Akalkot – see below.

1707 – 1760 Meherban Shrimant Fatehsinh I Shivaji Raje Bhonsle, Raja of Akalkot. b. at Parad, ca. 1697, as Ranoji Lokhende, eldest son of Meherban Sayaji Lokhende, Patil of Parad, educ. privately. Orphaned at a young age and adopted by H.H. Kshatriya Kulawatasana, Sinhasanadhishwar, Shrimant Shivaji III Raje Bhonsle Shiva Narpati Shahu Chhatrapati Maharaj, Raja of Satara, in August 1707. While still a young boy, he dispersed a band of highwaymen who attacked the Chhatrapati’s train, and was rewarded for this act of gallantry by being adopted by his patron’s secondary wife (but head of his household) Shrimant Soubhagyavati Virubai Sahib [Daruni Mahal Dusravada], named by her as Fatehsinh Shivaji Raje Bhonsle and granted the title of Rajkumar Chiranjiva (prince). Granted a large desmukhi watan consisting of Kolhapur and several villages yielding revenues of Rs 35 lakhs p.a., 7^th July 1708. He received further grants of land to cover his military expenses in 1713, and finally a grant of the jagir of Akalkot with additional Royal ceremonial privileges in 1715. He served on numerous military expeditions, including Kolhapur in 1718, Bundelkhand in 1730, to Bhaganagar in the Karnatak, and to Trichinapoli in the train of the Pratinidhi and Raghuji Bhosle in 1748, before finally retiring to his jagir in 1749. Granted a fresh sanad confirming Akalkot as a hereditary inam and a continuation of his military saranjam, 1749. m. (first) at Satara, 1710, Shrimant Akhand Soubhagyavati Rani Ahalyabai Raje Bhonsle (b. before November 1699; d. by sati after the death of her husband, 1760), a lady from the Shirke family. m. (second) Shrimant Akhand Soubhagyavati Rani Gujabai Raje Sahib Bhonsle (d. by sati after the death of her husband, 1760), a lady from the Mohite family. He d.s.p.m. at the Juna Rajwada, Akalkot, 20^th November 1760, having adopted the son of his younger brother as his son and successor:

1) Meherban Shrimant Shahaji I Fatehsinh Raje Bhonsle [Bala Sahib], Raja of Akalkot – see below.

1760 – 1789 Meherban Shrimant Shahaji I Fatehsinh Raje Bhonsle [Bala Sahib], Raja of Akalkot, son of Meherban Shrimant Bahaji Lokhende, Patil of Parad, educ. privately. Adopted by his natural paternal uncle, Meherban Shrimant Fatehsinh I Shivaji Raje Bhonsle [Bava Sahib], Raja of Akalkot in 1755. Succeeded on his death, 20^th November 1760. m. several wives. He d. at the Juna Rajwada, Akalkot, 1789 (succ. by his eldest son), having had issue, two sons and one daughter:

1) Rao Sahib Meherban Shrimant Fatehsinh II Shahaji Raje Bhonsle [Aba Sahib], Raja of Akalkot – see below.
2) Meherban Shrimant Tuljaji Shahaji Raje Bhonsle, of Kurla. He quarrelled with his elder brother and secured a division of the family properties, through the intervention of the Peshwa, receiving Kurla, in the Khutav sub-division of Satara as a separate jagir. He d. after 1820, having had issue, three sons:
- a) Meherban Shrimant Shivaji Tuljaji Raje Bhonsle, of Kurla. He built the Girijashankar Temple. He had issue, one son:
  - i) Meherban Shrimant Maloji Shivaji Raje Bhonsle, of Kurla. m. (first) Shrimant Akhand Soubhagyavati Deokabai Sahib, sister of Shrimant Narayanrao Bhupalkar. m. (second) Shrimant Akhand Soubhagyavati Radhabai Sahib. He d.s.p.m. having adopted the elder son of his first cousin, once removed, as his son and successor:
    - (1) Meherban Shrimant Shivajirao Maloji Raje Bhonsle, of Kurla. b. 1874, son of Meherban Shrimant Sambhaji Tulaji Raje Bhonsle [Bumia Sahib], educ. Satara High Sch. Adopted by his cousin and succeeded him in the Kurla estate. He had issue, one son:
      
      (a) Meherban Shrimant Tuljajirao Shivajirao Raje Bhonsle, of Kurla. b. at Kurla, 13^th January 1898. Fl 1941. [Connected to Raj Ratna Shrimant Mansinghrao Ramchandrarao Naik Nimbalkar.] He had issue, two sons:
      
      (i) Meherban Shrimant Shivajirao Tuljajirao Raje Bhonsle, of Kurla. Fl 1941. He had issue:

Adopted by Shrimant Rani Suchitrabai alias Samyukta Raje Jayasinhrao Bhonsle and assumed the name Maloji Raje Samyukta Raje Bhonsle, ca. 10^th January 2005. Succeeded on the death of his adoptive mother, as Meherban Shrimant Maloji III Raje Samyukta Raje Bhonsle [Baba Raje], Raja of Akalkot – see below.

- b) Meherban Shrimant Shahji Tuljaji Raje Bhonsle [Nacca Sahib]. He had issue, four sons:
  - i) Meherban Shrimant Bhawaji Shahji Raje Bhonsle, of Kurla. b. ca. 1847, educ. Bishop Cotton’s High Sch, Poona. m. (first) Shrimant Akhand Soubhagyavati Aslaibai Raje Bhonsle (d. in childbirth 1889). m. (second) Shrimant Akhand Soubhagyavati …bai Raje Bhonsle. He d. 1896, having had issue, one son and two daughters:
    - (1) Meherban Shrimant Sardar Ganpatji Bhawanji Raje Bhonsle, of Kurla. A first class sardar of the Deccan. Additional Magistrate. b. 1875, educ. privately. m.       (c) Shrimant Ahilyabai Raje Bhonsle [Shrimant Akhand Soubhagyavati Ahilyabai Gaekwad]. b. at Akalkot, 1911. m. at Indumati Mahal, Baroda, 29^th May 1925, Meherban Shrimant Bhadrasinhrao [Shankarrao] Anandrao Gaekwad, CIE (b. 23^rd November 1896; d. from heart failure, at Dwarka/Okha, 20^th May 1946), sometime Diwan of Baroda, third son of General Meherban Shrimant Anandrao Kashirao Gaekwad, Himmat Bahadur, CIE, sometime Senapati (C-in-C) of the Baroda State Forces. She d. 1990, having had issue, two sons – see India (Baroda).

1789 – 1823 Rao Sahib Meherban* Fatehsinh II Shahaji Raje Bhonsle [Aba Sahib], Raja of Akalkot. b. at the Juna Rajwada, Akalkot, 1770, elder son of Meherban Shrimant Shahaji I Fatehsinh Raje Bhonsle [Bala Sahib], Raja of Akalkot, educ. privately. Succeeded on the death of his father, 1789. He became a guaranteed jagirdar of the HEIC under the Raja of Satara by the terms of the Satara Treaty on 25^th September 1819, and concluded an agreement to that effect with the HEIC 3^rd July 1820. This was followed by a subsequent agreement with the Raja of Satara 11^th July 1820. m. an only wife, a lady from a family from Govza. He d. at the Juna Rajwada, Akalkot, 17^th April 1823, having had issue, one son and three daughters, including:

1) Meherban Shrimant Raja Maloji I Raje Fatehsinh Raje Bhonsle [Baba Sahib], Raja of Akalkot – see below.

1822 – 1823 Meherban Shrimant Maloji I Fatehsinh Raje Bhonsle [Baba Sahib], Raja of Akalkot. b. at the Juna Rajwada, Akalkot, 1803, only surviving son of Rao Sahib Meherban Fatehsinh II Shahaji Raje Bhonsle [Aba Sahib], Raja of Akalkot, by his only wife, educ. privately. Succeeded on the death of his father, 17^th April 1823 (confirmed by the Governor of Bombay 21^st June 1823). m. (first) a daughter of Shrimant Sayajirao Ghatge. m. (second) a daughter of Meherban Shrimant Fakirjirao Nimbalkar, of Phaltan. m. (third) a daughter of Shrimant Shivaranjirao Ghatge. a) Meherban Shrimant Tuljajirao Fatehsinh Raje Bhonsle. b. 1852, educ. Poona. He opposed the adoption and succession of Raja Fatehsinhrao III in 1896 and conducted a long running campaign for his own claim to the Akalkot gadi. Vice-Presdt Poona Sarvajanik Sabha. m. (first) Shrimant Akhand Soubhagyavati Bhagirathibai Raje Bhonsle (d. before 1875), daughter of Shrimant Sakhojirao Baber, Saramjamdar of Sonand. m. (second) September 1875, Shrimant Akhand Soubhagyavati Bhagirathibai Raje Bhonsle II. m. (third) 28^th May 1899, Shrimant Akhand Soubhagyavati Vithabai Raje Bhonsle, daughter of Shrimant Keshawarao Thorat [Bapuji Sahib], of Walve. He d. 1828 – 1857 Meherban Shrimant Shahaji II Maloji Raje Bhonsle [Appa Sahib], Raja of Akalkot. b. at the Juna Rajwada, Akalkot, 1820, elder son of Meherban Shrimant Maloji I Fatehsinh Raje Bhonsle [Baba Sahib], Raja of Akalkot, educ. privately. Succeeded on the death of his father, before 30^th June 1828. Reigned under the Guardianship of S.A.S. Tulajabai Raje Bhonsle, under the direction of officers appointed by the Raja of Satara. However, these Satara officials very soon alienated the nobles, landholders and the populace with their highhanded ways, auctioning off Royal jewels, raising taxation levels and detaining respected local leaders. A general revolt led by the watanadars and inamdars broke out on 10^th July 1830. They expelled the Sataras, established control of the town and garrisoned the fort. British forces had to be sent in to quell the revolt on 12^th July 1830. A British Administrator in the person of Captain Jameson was appointed 13^th July 1830 to administer the jagirs until the Raja came of age. He was invested with ruling powers, 1838. He became a direct tributary of the HEIC 5^th September 1839, and was placed under the political superintendence of the Collector of Sholapur in April 1850. m. (first) at Torgal, 7^th March 1836, Shrimant Akhand Soubhagyavati Rani Parvatibai Raje Bhonsle, daughter of Meherban Shrimant Lakshmanrao Shinde, Sena Khas Khel Sena Dhurandhar Vishwasvidhi, Samust Shiv Dhurandhar, Chief of Torgal, by his wife, Shrimant Akhand Soubhagyavati Ailubai Sahib Shinde. m. 1) Shrimant Maloji II Shahaji Raje Bhonsle [Buwa Sahib], Raja of Akalkot (s/o Anandibai) - see below.

** one of these last three wives was a daughter of Shrimant Sardar Rushojirao Angre, of Alibag. Another was a daughter of Shrimant Aba Sahib Nigodi, of Bhungoh.

1857 - 1870 Meherban Shrimant Maloji II Shahaji Raje Bhonsle [Buwa Sahib], Raja of Akalkot. b. at the Juna Rajwada, Akalkot, ca. December 1837, only surviving son of Meherban Shrimant Shahaji II Maloji Raje Bhonsle [Appa Sahib], Raja of Akalkot, educ. privately. Succeeded on the death of his father, 1857. Granted a sanad of adoption, 11^th March 1862. Removed from the direct administration of the state by the Governor of Bombay, who appointed an Administrator over the state in 1865. m. (first) Shrimant Akhand Soubhagyavati Rani ... Bai Raje Bhonsle, daughter of Meherban Shrimant Vithalrao Mohite, of Warigal. m. (second) Shrimant Akhand Soubhagyavati Rani ... Bai Raje Bhonsle, daughter of Meherban Shrimant Ramchandrarao Chavan, of Daflepur. He d. at the Juna Rajwada, Akalkot, 1870, having had issue, one son and two daughters:
