GENEALOGY

1634 - 1648 Thakore Shri Kumbhoji I Meramanji, Thakore Sahib of Ardoi and Rib. b. at Rajkot, 1618, younger son of Thakore Shri Meramanji I Vibhoji Sahib, Thakore Sahib of Rajkot, by his second wife, Shri Chudasama Thakorani Sahiba, daughter of the Chudasama Girassia of Gondal, educ. privately. Granted Ardoi and Rib for his maintenance by his father in 1634. Expelled from Rajkot by his elder half brother. He then fled to Junagadh hoping to received assistance from the local faujdar, failing which he appealed to Jam Ranmalji of Nawanagar. Eventually negotiations were conducted with his brother, which ultimately reached resolution by a division of territory. The lands south of the Sardhar dyke went to Kumbhoji, while his half brother retained Rajkot and the lands north of Sardhar. He conquered Gondal but could not hold it against the faujdar of Junagadh and gave it up in 1648. He d. at Ardoi, 1648, having had issue, two sons:

1648 - 1713 Thakore Shri Sagramji I Kumbhoji Sahib, Thakore Sahib of Gondal. b. at Ardoi, 1634, elder son of Thakore Shri Kumbhoji I Meramanji, Thakore Sahib of Ardoi and Rib, educ. privately. Succeeded to Ardoi and Rib on the death of his father, 1648. Allied himself to the rulers of Junagadh and negotiated with them for the return of Gondal, which he received together with a grant of 86 villages. Transferred his capital to Gondal from Ardoi in 1652. m. Shri Jhalivalu Thakorani Sahiba, daughter of a Jhala Rajput of Vaghasia, in Jhalawad. He d. at Gondal, 1713, having had issue, four sons:

1713 - 1752 Thakore Shri Haloji Sagramji Sahib, Thakore Sahib of Gondal. b. at Gondal, 1676, eldest son of Thakore Shri Sagramji I Kumbhoji Sahib, Thakore Sahib of Gondal, by his wife, Shri Jhalivalu Thakorani Sahiba, educ. privately. Succeeded on the death of his father, 1713. Granted Dhoraji and four villages by a grateful Nawab Bahadur Khanji of Junagadh, in reward for his services in ridding him of Vasantrai Purabia 1746. He also acquired Bhayavadar from Govindram Desai by force, and a further dozen or so villages after subduing the unruly Kathis and Ayars. m. Shri Jhalivalu Thakorani Shri Balala Kunverba Sahiba, sister of Jhala Harisinhji, of Chordi and Gundala. He d. at the Naulakha Palace, Gondal, 1752, having had issue, four sons and one daughter:

1752 - 1789 Thakore Shri Kumbhoji II [Bha Kumbhaji] Haloji Sahib, Thakore Sahib of Gondal. b. at Gondal, 1711, eldest son of Thakore Shri Haloji Sagramji Sahib, Thakore Sahib of Gondal, by his wife, Shri Jhalivalu Thakorani Shri Balala Kunverba Sahiba, educ. privately. Succeeded on the death of his father, 1752. He fortified the towns of Gondal and Dhoraji. A powerful ruler and skilled diplomat, his neighbours frequently called upon him to smooth relations between warring parties, and were particularly adept in assuaging the rapacious Marathas. He was also instrumental in persuading the Nawab of Junagadh to murder his unpopular Dewan Amarji in 1784, by rewarding him with a bribe of koris 3 lakhs. He obtained Upleta, Jetalsa r, Meti, Majethe, Lath and Bhimoria from the Nawabs of Junagadh in 1787, in exchange for a debt that the Nawab could no longer honour. He also added Sarsai and Champarda from the Jamshai Koris. He also encouraged skilled farmers and craftsmen, including m any Arabs to settle in his newly conquered lands. m. (first) Shri Jadejivalu Thakorani Shri Naniba Kunverba Sahiba, daughter of the raizada of Sarodar, in Nawanagar. m. (second) Shri Jhalivalu Thakorani Sahiba, daughter of a bhayad of Limbdi. He d. at the Naulakha Palace, Gondal, 1789, having had issue, two sons:

1789 - 1791 Thakore Shri Muluji Sagramji Sahib, Thakore Sahib of Gondal. b. at the Naulakha Palace, Gondal, 1754, eldest son of Kumar Shri Sagramji Kumbhoji Sahib, Yuvraj Sahib of Gondal, by his first wife, Kunberi Shri Fulba Kunverba Sahiba, educ. privately. Succeeded on the death of his grandfather, 1789. Ruled largely under the influence of one Waghela Veroji, of Bandhia. m. (first) Shri Gohilvalu Thakorani Shri Ajiba Kunverba Sahiba, daughter of H.H. Maharaj Raol Shri Akherajji III Bhavsinhji Sahib, Maharaj Raol of Bhavnagar. m. (second) Thakorani Shri Adiba Kunverba Sahiba, daughter of the raizada of Chorwad. He d. at the Naulakha Palace, Gondal, 1791, having had issue, two sons:

1791 - 1800 Thakore Shri Dajibhai [Sangaji] Muluji Sahib, Thakore Sahib of Gondal. b. at the Naulakha Palace, Gondal, 1775, younger son of Thakore Shri Muluji Sagramji Sahib, Thakore Sahib of Gondal, by his second wife, Thakorani Shri Adiba Kunverba Sahiba, educ. privately. Succeeded on the death of his father, 1791. Attacked by a large army of Marathas under Abu Shelukar in 1794, on the instigation of t he Nawanagar Dewan Meraman Khawas. He was more interested in literary and scholastic pursuits, leaving he cares of government largely to his uncle, Devabhai. He patronised poets and literary figures at his court, and composed "Pravin Sagar". m. (first) Shri Chuvanvahu Thakorani Sahiba, a lady from Vaosavey. m. (second) Shri Jhalivalu Thakorani Sahiba, a lady from Sayla. m. (third) Shri Jethvivalu Thakorani Sahiba, a lady from Porbandar. m. (fourth) Shri Vaghelivahu Thakorani Sahiba. 1800 - 1812 H.H. Thakore Shri Devaji [Devabhai] Sagramji Sahib, Thakore Sahib of Gondal. b. 1769, second son of Kumar Shri Sagramji Kumbhoji Sahib, Yuvraj Sahib of Gondal, by his first wife, Kunwari Shri Fulba Kunverba Sahiba, educ. privately. Succeeded on the death of his childless nephew, 1800. Although his reign was marked by an unhealthy reliance on the advice of bad companions and friends, nevertheless he exhibited a very kindly heart, becoming the first ruler of his race to accept Colonel Walker's advice and discourage female infanticide. m. (first) Shri Bada Jhalivalu Thakorani Shri Kasiba Kunverba Sahiba (d.s.p.), daughter of the Jhala chief of Balala. m. (second) Shri Ladi Jhalivalu Thakorani Shri Baijibai Kunverba Sahiba, of Dhrangadhra. He d. at the Naulakha Palace, Gondal, 1812, having had issue, four sons by his second wife.

1812 - 1814 H.H. Thakore Shri Nathuji [Nathubhai] Devaji Sahib, Thakore Sahib of Gondal, eldest son of H.H. Thakore Shri Devaji [Devabhai] Sagramji Sahib, Thakore Sahib of Gondal, by his second wife, Thakorani Shri Baijibai Kunverba Sahiba, educ. privately. Succeeded on the death of his father, 1812. He forced his father's incompetent kamdar Vasanji to resign, and insisted on carrying on the administration himself. A well educated and courageous man, he ruled wisely and quietly without any remarkable or adverse events. m. (first) at Gondal, 1807, Thakorani Shri Jijiba Kunverba Sahiba, of Bharada. m. (second) at Gondal, 1807, at the same time as his first wife, Shri Vaghelivalu Thakorani Shri Keshaba Kunverba Sahiba, daughter of a Vaghel girasia. 1814 - 1821 H.H. Thakore Shri Kanuji Devaji Sahib, Thakore Sahib of Gondal, second son of H.H. Thakore Shri Devaji [Devabhai] Sagramji Sahib, Thakore Sahib of Gondal, by his second wife, Thakorani Shri Baijibai Kunverba Sahiba, educ. privately. Succeeded on the death of his elder brother, 1814. His reign reverted to the pattern under his father. The Thakore took to drink and neglected his duties, leaving the administration in the care of two hapless advisers, Jagannath and Kanji, who allowed the administration to collapse and disorder to spread throughout the land. m. (first) Thakorani Shri Nanibaiba Kunverba Sahiba, of Soderda. m. (second) Shri Valivahu Thakorani Sahiba, of Talaja. m. 1821 - 1841 H.H. Thakore Shri Chandrasinhji II [Motibhai] Devaji Sahib, Thakore Sahib of Gondal. b. at the Naulakha Palace, Gondal, 1797, third son of H.H. Thakore Shri Devaji [Devabhai] Sagramji Sahib, Thakore Sahib of Gondal, by his second wife, Thakorani Shri Baijibai Kunverba Sahiba, educ. privately. Succeeded on the death of his childless elder brother, 1821. He inherited an administration in collapse but did little to alleviate any of the problems caused by his wayward brother. He constantly changed his ministers and the resulting confusion and loss of continuity resulted in a worsening situation. Landlords and cultivators avoided or delayed their revenue payments, tax receipts fell, and the state debt climbed to koris 20 lakhs. m.
