- 1726 - 1732 Shrimant Sardar Pilajirao Gaekwad, Sena Khas Khel Shamsher Bahadur, of Sonagad, eldest son of Meherban Shrimant Jhingojirao Kerojirao Gaekwad, by his first wife, Shrimant Akhand Soubhagyavati Bhamabai Sahib Gaekwad, daughter of Shrimant Indurikar Pathar, educ. privately. Adopted by his childless paternal uncle, Shrimant Sardar Damajirao Kerojirao [Panjirao] Gaekwad, Shamsher Bahadur, as his son and heir. Succeeded him in the title of Shamsher Bahadur 1721. He established himself at the fortress of Sonagad in 1726, and then set about carving out a kingdom from the territories over which he collected revenues on behalf of the Peshwa. Granted the title of Sena Khas Khel by the Peshwa, 1731. m. (first) Shrimant Akhand Soubhagyavati Radhabai Sahib Gaekwad, of the Charve family of Tulegoan. m. (second) Shrimant Akhand Soubhagyavati Suntibai Sahib Gaekwad, daughter of the Alirao family of Tulegoan. m. (third) Shrimant Akhand Soubhagyavati Revubai Sahib Gaekwad, daughter of the Saloki family of Poona. m. (fourth) Shrimant Akhand Soubhagyavati Baya Sahib Gaekwad [Bhawani Bai]. m. (i) Shrimant Akhand Soubhagyavati Munnoobai Sahib Gaekwad. m. (ii) Shrimant Akhand Soubhagyavati Ummabai Sahib Gaekwad. He was k. by a Mughal officer named Subedar Abhay Singh, at Dakore, 14th May 1732, having had issue, eight sons:
- 1) Shrimant Sayajirao [Bhavanrao] Sahib Gaekwad (s/o Munnoo), educ. privately. He was k. at the battle of Dabhoi, at Bhilapur, 1st April 1731.
- 2) Shrimant Yeshwantrao Sahib Gaekwad (s/o a concubine), educ. privately. m. Shrimant Akhand Soubhagyavati Kushabai Sahib Gaekwad. He had issue, one son:
- a) Shrimant Trimbakrao Yeshwantrao Gaekwad. m. Shrimant Akhand Soubhagyavati Radabai Sahib Gaekwad. He d. after November 1812, leaving descendants.
- 3) Shrimant Rajashri Damajirao Gaekwad, Shamsher Bahadur, Maharaja of Baroda (s/o Munnoo) - see below.
- 4) Shrimant Rajashri Khanderao Sahib Gaekwad, Jumush Bahadur, of Kadi, educ. privately. Granted the title of Jumush Bahadur by the Peshwa and received Kadi, Dehgam and Kapadvanj in jagir from his elder brother. Subedar of Nadiad and the Northern Districts. Opposed Fatehsinhrao's assumption of power and joined in the rebellion of Govindrao, 1778. m. (first) Shrimant Akhand Soubhagyavati Rajasbai Sahib Gaekwad. m. (i) a Rajput lady of Duzbara. He d. 1785, having had issue, six sons:
- a) Shrimant Madhavrao Khanderao Gaekwad. m. Shrimant Akhand Soubhagyavati Gopikabai Sahib (d. after 1812). He d.s.p.m. before 27th November 1812.
- b) Shrimant Rajashri Malharrao Khanderao Gaekwad [Dada Sahib], Himmat Bahadur, of Kadi (s/o Rajas Bai), educ. privately. Rebelled against Govindrao 1793. - i) Shrimant Khanderao Malharrao [Balaji Sahib] Gaekwad. b. 1784, educ. privately. m. at Baroda, after 11th October 1810, Shrimant Akhand Soubhagyavati Prithibai Gaekwad. He d. 9th September 1812, having had issue, one son.

- c) Shrimant Hanmatrao Khanderao Gaekwad (half-brother of Malharrao). m. Shrimant Akhand Soubhagyavati Tulsabai Gaekwad (d. after 1812), a Rajput lady. He d. at Mandvi, before 14th April 1807, having had issue, one son and one daughter:
- i) Shrimant Jaysinhrao Hanmatrao Gaekwad. Excluded from the succession because his mother was a Rajput.
- d) Shrimant Bhavanrao Khanderao Gaekwad. He d.s.p.m. after October 1795.
- e) Shrimant Kerojirao Khanderao Gaekwad [Bawa Sahib] (elder s/o the Duzbara Rajput lady). m. a Rajput lady of Alid, a Sadrah village on the Sabur Kantha. He d. before 30th April 1810, having had issue, one son:

- f) Shrimant Devirao Khanderao Gaekwad (younger s/o the Duzbara Rajput lady). He d. after 9th March 1813.

- g) Shrimant Appajirao Khanderao Gaekwad [Appa Sahib]. He d. 9th March 1813.
- h) Shrimant Ramji Gaekwad. A chela of Khanderao. He d. after November 1812.
- 5) Shrimant Jaisinhrao Gaekwad (s/o Bhawani Bai). m. (first) Shrimant Akhand Soubhagyavati Bhowanibai Sahib Gaekwad. m. (second) Shrimant Akhand Soubhagyavati Sukunabai Sahib Gaekwad, a Rajput lady. He d. after 14th November 1751, having had issue, six sons:
- a) Shrimant Bhowanrao Jaisinhrao Gaekwad (s/o Bhowani Bai).

Master of Tyrrell Leith Lodge No 43 (Baroda) of Freemasons 1904. FRGS, FRSL, FRAS. Dir. The Bombay Central Co-op. Bank Ltd 1911.
