GENEALOGY
1863 - 1866 and 1868 - 1879 H.H. Amir al-Mumenin, Amir Sher 'Ali Khan, Amir of Afghanistan. b. 1825, sixth son of H.H. Amir al-Mumenin, Amir-i-Kabir, Amir Dost Muhammad Khan, Amir of Afghanistan, by his fifth wife, Khadija Begum, daughter of Haji Rahmatu'llah Khan Popalzai, educ. privately. Governor of Kuram 1842-1845, Ghuzni 1845-1858, Kandahar 1858-1863, and Herat 1863. Appointed as Heir Apparent with the title of Vali Ahad, after the death of his elder full-brother, 2nd July 1858. Proclaimed at Herat on the death of his father, 12th June 1863. Defeated at the battle of Sheikhabad by his brother Afzal and deposed, 9th May 1866, but continued to rule at Herat. Restored on the deposition of his elder brother, 8th September 1868 and recognised as Amir by Britain March 1869. m. (first) Khurshid Begum, a Babakar-Khel. m. (second) Bibi Narinj, a Nuristani consort. m. (third) Maryam Begum, daughter of Sa'adat Khan Mohmand, of Lalpura. m. (fourth) Aisha Begum. m. (fifth) a Nuristani consort. m. (sixth) a Safi wife. m. (seventh) a daughter of H.E. Sardar Mir Afzal Khan, sometime Governor of Farah and Kandahar. m. (eighth) Bobo Jan Begum, daughter of H.E. Sardar Muhammad 'Usman Khan Saddozai, Nizam ud-Daula, sometime Wazir-i-Azam to Shah Shuja. He d. at Mazar-i-Sharif, 21st February 1879 (bur. there, at the Rauza), having had issue, six sons and six daughters:
