- 1863 - 1866 and 1868 - 1879 H.H. Amir al-Mumenin, Amir Sher 'Ali Khan, Amir of Afghanistan. b. 1825, sixth son of H.H. Amir al-Mumenin, Amir-i-Kabir, Amir Dost Muhammad Khan, Amir of Afghanistan, by his fifth wife, Khadija Begum, daughter of Haji Rahmatu'llah Khan Popalzai, educ. privately. Governor of Kuram 1842-1845, Ghuzni 1845-1858, Kandahar 1858-1863, and Herat 1863. Appointed as Heir Apparent with the title of Vali Ahad, after the death of his elder full-brother, 2nd July 1858. Proclaimed at Herat on the death of his father, 12th June 1863. Defeated at the battle of Sheikhabad by his brother Afzal and deposed, 9th May 1866, but continued to rule at Herat. Restored on the deposition of his elder brother, 8th September 1868 and recognised as Amir by Britain March 1869. m. (first) Khurshid Begum, a Babakar-Khel. m. - 1) H.E. Sardar Muhammad 'Ali Khan (s/o Khurshid). Installed as Heir Presumptive by his grandfather, at the Deh Bori, Kabul, June 1863. Governor of Kabul 1863-1865. m.(first) Bilqis Begum (m. second, 1865, his younger brother, H.E. Sardar Muhammad Ibrahim Khan), a Bamizai lady. m. (second) a Ghilzai lady. m. (third) Bibi Mariam (m. second, 1865, H.E. Sardar Muhammad Ibrahim Khan). He was k. in the battle of Kujhbaz, 3rd June 1865, having had issue, a son:
- a) Sardar Ahmad 'Ali Jan (s/o the Ghilzai lady). Hon. ADC to Lord Roberts 1880. He had issue, one son:
- i) Sardar 'Abdu'l 'Ali Khan. m. Maryam Begum, daughter of H.H. Amir al-Mumenin, Amir Muhammad Yaqub Khan, Amir of Afghanistan and its dependencies, by a Hazara consort. He had issue, four sons and one daughter:
- (1) Sardar Ahmad Shah Khan. m. Ruh Afza Begum, daughter of H.E. Sardar 'Azizu'llah Khan Ziai, sometime Ambassador to Iran, by Masuma Begum, his Behsudi consort. He has issue, one son and four daughters:

- (2) Sardar 'Abdu'l Wali Khan. m. Sabira Begum, youngest daughter of H.R.H Sardar Muhammad Kabir Khan, sometime PMG and Dir. Medical Dept., by his third wife, Tajwar Begum, a Nuristani lady. He had issue, one son:
- (3) H.E. Sardar Nisar Ahmad Khan. Governor of Badakhshan. m. a daughter of Muhammad Nauruz, and had issue.
- (4) Sardar 'Ali Ahmad Khan. He had issue, one daughter:
- (1) A daughter. m. Mir Sikander Khan, and had issue, one son.
- 2) H.E. Sardar Muhammad Ibrahim Khan (s/o a Safi wife). Governor of Kabul 1865-1866, surrendered the Bala Hissar to Amir 'Abdu'l Rahman Khan in February 1866, Governor of Herat 1868-1869, of Ghazni 1871, and Kabul 1871-1876, City Magistrate Kabul 1876-1878. Abu Habifa Coll., and Kabul Univ., Pir of the Qadiriya Sufi Order since 1964, Counsellor for Reliious Affairs 1965-1978, Minister for Foreign Affairs 1994, Leader of the National Islamic Front of Afghanistan since 1979, younger son of Pir Sayyid Hassan Gailani [Hazrat Naqib Sahib], Pir of the Qadiriya Sufi Order. Sardar Muhammad Hashim Khan, sometime Governor of Kandahar and Kurram, by his wife, Bibi Zainab. He d. at Karachi, March 1950 (bur. there), having had issue, two sons:
- i) Colonel Sardar 'Abdu'l Aziz Khan. b. 1915. m. Mahbuba Begum, eldest daughter of Sardar Muhammad Azam Khan, by his wife, Nur Jahan Begum, fifth daughter of H.H. Amir al-Mumenin, Amir Muhammad Yaqub Khan, Amir of Afghanistan and its dependencies. He d. at Rawalpindi, 5th March 1992 (bur. there).

- d) Sardar 'Abdu'l Qadir Khan. b. 1915 (s/o Sahib Jahan). Senior Supt. of Police Sindh. m. Shah Gul Begum (d. at Karachi, 3rd August 1997, bur. there), eldest daughter of Sardar 'Abdu'l Qadir Khan Durrani, by his wife, Mastura Begum, daughter of Sardar Nur Muhammad Khan. He d. at Karachi, 28th April 1976 (bur. there), having had issue, three sons:
- i) Sardar Asad Qadir Khan. b. 24th February 1944. m. Aida Jan, daughter of Aziz Mujaddidi, by his wife, Nafisah Jan. He has issue, one daughter.

Rebelled against his brother, 1864. Captured Kabul and proclaimed as Amir 2nd March 1866 (recognised by the Government of India 5th May 1866). Defeated his brother at Sheikhabad, 9th May 1866. m. (first) a daughter of Samad Khan Bangash. m. (second) Bibi Murwarid (d. September 1874). He d. 7th October 1867 (succ. by his younger brother), having had issue, one son and three daughters:

- 4) H.E. Sardar Muhammad Ishaq Khan. b. 1851 (s/o the Armenian lady). Governor of Kohistan 1866-1867, Cdr. of the forces in Afghan Turkestan 1869, Governor of Turkestan 1880-1888. Proclaimed himself Amir in June 1888 when he received news of the illness of Amir 'Abdu'l Rahman. Defeated at the Battle of Gaznigak 19th September 1888 and fled to Russian Turkestan. He d. at Samarkand, sometime afterwards, having had issue, two sons:
